The milk White Orchid ( Neotinea lactea (Poir.) RMBateman, Pridgeon & MWChase , Syn .: Orchis lactea Poir. ) Is a plant from the family of orchids (Orchidaceae). It used to be counted it to the genus of orchids ( Orchis ). According to recent molecular genetic research, the species is now included in the genus Neotinea .

description

The milk white orchid is a perennial , herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 7 to 20 centimeters. The stem is strong. The 6 to 8 leaves are light green and unspotted or barely spotted. The basal leaves are 4 to 9 inches long, 1.5 to 2.5 inches wide and broadly ovate-lanceolate. 2 or 3 leaves surround the stem. The bracts are about as long as the ovary. The inflorescence is 2.5 to 5 inches long, dense and egg-shaped. The pale pink bracts curve into a helmet. The outer bracts are long, pointed, bent outwards and darkly veined, in the center they are greenish or completely green. The lip is whitish to pink, mottled red, 6 to 8 millimeters in size and deeply three-lobed with a two-column central part. The lobes are bent downwards. The spur is 6 millimeters long, thick and directed downwards.

The flowering period extends from February to April.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 42.

Distribution and location

Milky-white orchid is found almost all over the Mediterranean . It grows in France, Sardinia, Corsica, Algeria, Italy, Sicily, Tunisia, on the Balkan Peninsula, in Bulgaria, in the Aegean Sea and in Turkey. The lime-loving species grows on grasslands, in maquis and in sparse forests up to the mountain step. It is found at altitudes between 0 and 1800 meters above sea level.
