The Baza 91 Logistica Deveselu is a former military airfield of the Romanian Air Force in Caracal and lies in Olt County , about 60 km north of the border with Bulgaria.

The military area now serves as a NATO missile defense base and is one of the largest military bases in the USA on the territory of a former Warsaw Pact state. A second missile defense base is the Stolp-Reitz (Słupsk-Redzikowo) military airfield in Poland.

history

The airfield was built in the early 1950s with the help of the Soviet Union and in March 1952 the first aircraft, a MiG-15 , arrived on the 700 hectare site. They were later replaced by MiG-19 and in February 1962 the first MiG-21 arrived on Baza Aeriană 91 . This type of aircraft was the main type of aircraft for the next four decades until the end of flight operations in 2002, most recently with the 91st Jagdgruppe Grupul 91 Aviatie Vanatoare .

The Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System (2013)

In 2011 the USA and Romania agreed to develop Deveselu as a base for future ballistic missile defense . This required an investment of $ 400 million. The US planned to use a third of the base and deploy 200 to 500 soldiers. In the neighboring village of Deveselu , which had a population of 3300 (2011) , accommodation was to be built for the Americans.

Construction began at the end of October 2013 and the operational readiness of the first land-based AEGIS system with the Mk 41 Vertical Launching System and the SM-3 Block IB missiles was achieved in 2015. The basic elements of the system include a deck structure with four AN / SPY-1 radars and the take-off position about 500 m away, consisting of three Mk 41 VLS modules with eight cells each. As part of the expansion, the former runway was demolished.

On December 18, 2015, the US officially put the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System (AAMDS) into operation at the Naval Support Facility (NSF) Devesulu and operational readiness was achieved on May 12, 2016. A total of 200 soldiers are stationed here. It is an element of NATO's European Phased Adaptive Approach (EPAA) missile defense program and was placed under the US 6th Fleet .

The US missile shield system went into operation on May 13, 2016 .
