The ships of the Millau Bridge -type among the ULCS - container ships .
history
The series was commissioned in 2013 by the Japanese ship owner, shipbuilding and financing house Shoei Kisen Kaisha and built by the Imabari Shipbuilding Company in Hiroshima from 2014 . The ships are used by the Japanese shipping company “K” Line on the Europe-Far East route. The first delivered ship of the five units to be built was the Millau Bridge , which was put into service in 2015 . Another five ships were ordered from the same shipyard. Since 2018 the ships have been operating for Ocean Network Express , a joint venture between Nippon Yusen Kaisha , Mitsui OSK Lines and “K” Line.
Another five ships were built at Imabari in Hiroshima for Evergreen Marine .
In September 2015, five more ships were ordered by Shoei Kisen Kaisha , which were delivered between 2018 and 2019 and have since been chartered to Yang Ming Line .
Incidents
On April 6, 2020, the Milano Bridge in Busan collided with a container bridge and caused it to collapse.
technology
The double hull ships belong to the group of ULCS container ships. As with almost all ULCS designs, the engine system is located aft and the deckhouse is located far forward, which enables an improved line of sight and therefore higher forward deck loading. Among other things, the bunker tanks are arranged below the superstructure in order to meet the applicable MARPOL regulations. The drive system with the two-stroke diesel main engine is arranged far aft. To improve maneuverability, transverse thrusters are arranged in the bow and stern. The holds of the ships are closed with pontoon hatch covers. The ships have a maximum container capacity of around 14,000 TEU , with an average container weight of fourteen tons, the capacity is reduced. There are also connections for integral refrigerated containers .
A special feature of the ship type is a covered forecastle with raised bulwarks, which serves as a breakwater.
