On February 1, 1991 PMDM was established as a joint venture between Papst KG in Germany (at that time the leading manufacturer of spindle motor technology) and Minebea Co. In August 1993 Minebea took over all the shares in PMDM and thus became the sole owner of the research and development center, which at that time was still located in Spaichingen , Tuttlingen district. In the years that followed, the company was able to secure a global name in the computer industry for itself through successful developments in the field of spindle motor technology as well as manufacturing and measurement technology from Germany, combined with precision parts production and large-scale know-how from Japan, and greatly expanded its global market share in spindle motors for hard disk drives . Today Minebea has a production capacity of 6 to 9 million motors per month in its plants in Southeast Asia, making it the second largest supplier of spindle motors in hard drives worldwide.

The research center in Villingen-Schwenningen, which was built in 2000 and expanded in 2004 by an extension, employs more than 350 people (as of 2017), primarily scientists, engineers and technicians. On an area of more than 11,000 m², in addition to spindle motors and energy harvesting systems, they also develop brushless DC motors for automobiles and special industrial applications .

In addition to researching new products and developing industrial and spindle motors, the production of prototypes and sample motors is part of the company's actual core business. Parts production, assembly, analysis and qualification take place almost entirely at the Villingen-Schwenningen location. PMDM develops and manufactures most of the machines and devices required for large-scale production in-house.
