Mintimer Sharipowitsch Shaimijew (born January 20, 1937 in Anjakowo, Aktanysch Rayon, Tatar ASSR , today Tatarstan ) is a Russian-Tatar politician who was President of the Republic of Tatarstan within the Russian Federation from 1991 to 2010 . Before that, Shaimijew had been First Secretary of the Tatar Regional Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union since 1989. Shaimiev's fourth term as president in a row ended after 18 years on March 25, 2010, for a fifth term he was no longer available at his own request.

Mintimer Shaimijew comes from a Tatar farming family. After finishing school in 1954, he began studying in the technical department of the Agricultural Institute in the Tatar capital Kazan . After completing his studies in 1959, he worked in the field of agricultural mechanization. His political career began in 1969 when he was appointed Minister for Improvement and Water Management of the Tatar ASSR (TASSR). In 1983 he was for a short time deputy chairman of the TASSR Council of Ministers and in the same year rose to one of the Tatar area secretaries of the Soviet Communist Party . In 1985 he became Chairman of the Council of Ministers of TASSR. From 1989 to 1990 he was First Area Secretary of the CPSU in the TASSR and in 1990 was elected chairman of the Tatar Supreme Soviet. During this time Tatarstan declared its state sovereignty. At the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union , he was elected the first President of the Republic of Tatarstan on June 12, 1991. On March 24, 1996 and March 25, 2001, he was confirmed in office by elections, and on March 25, 2005 at the proposal of Russian President Putin by the Tatar parliament. From 1994 to 2001 he represented Tatarstan in the Russian Federation Council . Since December 1, 2001, Shaimiev has been a vice-chairman of the United Russia party .

In 2007 he received the King Faisal Prize for services to Islam.

Shaimijew is married and has two sons. Radik Shaimijew (English transcription Radik Shaymiev ), the younger of the two, became the 2003 European Autocross Champion. Ajrat Schaimijew (English transcription Ayrat Shaymiev ) is even three-time autocross European champion (2002, 2004 and 2005) and, together with Tatarstan's Prime Minister Rustam Minnichanow , competed in all the races of the FIA rallycross - European championship for drivers 2007 . In 2008 and 2009 he again took part in this pan-European racing series with his 550 hp Ford Focus ST T16 4x4.
