Mirjana Marković

Mirjana Marković ( Serbian - Cyrillic Мирјана Марковић ; also Mira ; born July 10, 1942 in Požarevac , Serbia ; † April 14, 2019 in Sochi , Russia ) was the wife of the former Yugoslav and Serbian President Slobodan Milošević .

Life

Her mother Vera Miletić was arrested by the Gestapo and later shot. Her father Moma Marković was a partisan in Tito's People's Liberation Army and an important Serbian communist after World War II . Mira's aunt Davorjanka was Josip Broz Tito's partner during the war . Marković studied sociology in Belgrade and was active in the communist student movement. In 1965 she married Slobodan Milošević, whom she had known from school.

During his political activities, Milošević was seen as the pragmatic technocrat of power, his wife Mirjana as the ideologist who acted more in the background. After Milošević's break with the Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadžić in 1994 and the resulting dissatisfaction in parts of his SPS , Mirjana Marković was one of the founders of the Yugoslav Left Party , which she led until 2000, although she was never chairman.

Marković has been charged in Serbia for the illegal distribution of apartments. She was also accused of being involved in the kidnapping and murder of former Serbian President Ivan Stambolić . She was on the run from 2003 and was wanted by Interpol ; however, the Russian police refused to detain her, presumably due to the Milošević family's strong ties with Russia , where Mira Marković was staying. In early February 2008, the Serbian media reported, with reference to unnamed Russian sources, that she and her son Marko Milošević had already received political asylum in Russia in 2007 .
