The Apostolic Constitution Mirificus Eventus , which Pope Paul VI. Issued on December 7th, 1965, was the proclamation of an extraordinary jubilee in all Catholic dioceses of the world, which was proclaimed for the period from January 1st, 1966 to May 29th, 1966.

Conclusion of the council

At the end of the Second Vatican Council , Pope Paul VI saw himself. causes a special commemoration of the past four years to begin. He recalls the Holy Year , which in 1950 with the papal bull " Iubilaeum maximum " of May 26, 1949, by his predecessor Pope Pius XII. , had been called out. This, writes Paul VI. I, like him, swore the good spirit and the renewal of souls and reported the testimony of power. The men of this council would also have turned away from the perishable goods of this earth and heard the voice of the Church . This extraordinary jubilee counts as thanks for the work and resolutions of the council, which was achieved through the sending of the Holy Spirit and the active cooperation of the council participants. The wish that he expressed in his inaugural encyclicalEcclesiam suam ” of August 6, 1964, has now been fulfilled with great gratitude.

To the bishops

He instructs the bishops who have now returned to their dioceses to give the Pope's blessing in their cathedrals . To this end, he explains:

“The cathedral is also the mighty symbol of the visible Church of Christ who prays, sings and worships on this earth; that is, it is to be understood as the image of that mystical body, the members of which become the structure of love for neighbor, which is nourished by being dewed with the heavenly gifts. (Mirificus Eventus, No. 72,) "

The cathedrals

He particularly emphasized the importance of the diocesan cathedrals, in which he praised and honored them as architectural and spiritual temples and as the visible Church of Christ . He imposed special penal rules on the confessors , which they should observe in certain cases such as the violation of canonical rules , in cases of heresy and membership in Masonic associations. In special cases an indulgence could be granted.
