Mistreat ( English mistreatment / bad deed) is a neo-Nazi Finnish right-wing rock band from Kouvola . It enjoys a high status within the neo-Nazi music scene and is considered the first Finnish band to release a music album with racist lyrics.
history
Singer's punk roots
In 1988 Muke and other musicians founded a thrash metal band in the southeastern Finnish town of Kouvola, from which the right-wing rock band Mistreat emerged. The hardcore punk band Maho Neitsyt , whose singer Pexi is friends with Muke, also came from the same town . In 1990 the band asked Muke if he could take on the recently abandoned post of guitarist for the studio recordings of the 1991 album Ottaa paehän , to which he answered in the affirmative. Since Muke appeared as a well-known right-wing rocker on the band photo on the record cover , the fans acknowledged the publications with calls for boycotts. Muke left the band with a bad conscience. Muke also helped the punk band Raivopäät as a guitarist on occasions.
First line-up, first steps
After the band formed in 1988, the drummer Jönne, the bassist Kaitsu and the guitarist Suikanen joined the band in 1989, which was now called Synthetical Bastards, Sorbus Sound and Technodeath because the band members were metal fans. The names didn't sound authentic to a skinhead band, however, so the band called themselves Mistreat from then on, an English term that can have different meanings, for the band it only meant beating someone up. The band was now complete for concert appearances. The band played at small concerts since 1988. In 1990 the band played at the punk festival Puntala and caused shocked visitors with the right-wing extremist lyrics. For the label Alternative Action Records , some songs were recorded for a promotional sampler in 1990. The label selected "Skins Rule" from among the submitted songs, in which African Americans are discriminated against. However, the band was told that they would not achieve any success with metal music in the skinhead scene because the music was too fast and in the punk scene they were working towards the same result with Nazi texts. Nevertheless, the band recorded an EP for AA Records, which was released under the title Mistreat EP . Guitarist Suikanen left the band and made way for Arska, with whom Muke already played with Maho Neitsyt. Arska moved the band's musical style from metal to oi-punk.
In 1991 the band had gathered enough material and the right line-up to release a studio album. An LP was recorded for the Rebelles Européens label , but it was never released due to lack of clarity. Rock-O-Rama presented the band with a lucrative contract, which the band later refused, as the members had since been drafted into Finnish military service. Since they were all stationed in different barracks, there were no rehearsals together that year. When she was released in February 1992, a demo tape was recorded the following May and submitted to Rock-O-Rama. The poor quality of the music made itself felt by the long break of the band and the unprofessionalism to play the album drunk, so that Rock-O-Rama withdrew its interest in the release. The negotiations with Skull Records also came to nothing. From 1993 to 1995 the band gave concerts with the unreleased album material in the backhand. In 1994 the song "We ain't Gonna Fade Away" was recorded for the label Dignity Records, which released the song on the sampler Skinhead Revolt . The song received very good reactions and brought the band good publicity. When the band heard that there were some people in Helsinki who were interested in founding a record label for right-wing rock bands, they regained hope for a release. The band asked if they could have their album released there and got a positive response.
Publications
In 1995, despite the fact that the band had reduced itself to three people (Muke, Arska and Jönne) after several line-up changes, the band was able to record the first right-wing rock album from Finland on the newly founded right-wing rock label AinaSkin Musiikki on April 22nd, 1995 Faith and Fury should wear. Label owner Marko "Jäsä AinaSkin" Jarvinen, who at that time produced the war reporter video series for the right-wing Danish video production company NS88 Video Division, a subsidiary of NS Records , was able to promote the band in its videos that were distributed worldwide through interviews and concert excerpts . The album was very popular in Europe. The longtime Mistreat guitarist Miika joined the band in 1995 and shaped the band with his guitar work. At the same time, Miika was also one of the two guitarists in the German right-wing rock band Kraftschlag .
New Finnish Nazi bands such as Pig Killer, Wiking Division, Fatal Strike, Hate Crime, Endupdead and Sniper appeared on the right-wing rock scene after the album was released and were able to publish their material in their own country at AinaSkin Musikkii. Mistreat's concert appearances increased rapidly, also outside of Finland, e.g. B. in Sweden , where there was a much larger right-wing rock movement in the 1990s and the number of concert-goers was significantly higher than at right-wing rock concerts in Finland. The Czech Republic , Hungary , Spain , France and Italy were also among the countries in which Mistreat performed regularly. Mistreat was also invited to other countries. Mistreat was often on German stages on Friday and Saturday evenings. The band made many contacts with other bands. In 1996 Mistreat recorded the split album Brothers in Arms together with Kraftschlag on NS Records. The title Brothers in Arms alludes to the alliance between the Germans and the Finns in World War II. This CD also guaranteed full cash for the rights holders. In 1997 the successful album Flame from the North was released , which Mistreat brought out on its own label. In 1999 a CD was released on the German label Hate Society Records with newly dubbed songs and new songs that did not contain racial discrimination or were apolitical.
In 2002 an invitation took the band to the United States of America to record the split album Beer Bottles & Hockey Sticks together with Bound for Glory and to publish it on Panzerfaust Records . This album also sold out very quickly. Further editions were repressed. In 2003, the third studio album, Battle Cry , was released, but despite its musical development, it no longer stood out in the now richly filled pool of right-wing extremist albums. In the same year the band released an album with many old songs that had never been released under the album title Unfinished Business . In 2005 the fourth studio album Never Forgive ... Never Forget was released .
In July 2018, the band released their current album Heartless Bastards to mark the 30th anniversary of the band .
Current status
The band members live in three different cities and concentrate on families and work, which is why there are very few weekends when all band members have time to rehearse. However, the band occasionally appears at larger right-wing rock concerts in Europe. In 2020 a solo album by the singer was released.
style
Texts
The lyrics mix skinhead issues with politics, racism and anti-Semitism. But also the anti-Russian hostility advocated from the band's point of view is discussed. The band members see themselves as white Finns in Finland, whose continued existence of their people and cultural customs is allegedly threatened by immigration. The band glorifies the murder and expulsion of African Americans on the albums . Even ethnic cleansing would, according to the band a means to an end to Finland to rescue supposedly. Not only Jews and Afro-Americans are hounded, homosexuals, communists and hippies are also part of the band's often-discussed enemy image. The band also made some songs about their stand against drug use . The band also glorifies the role of the Finns in World War II . Otherwise, there are also modern topics such as songs of praise to skinheads and love songs about skin girls. In some songs the band exercises a form of social criticism, where the aim is to save Finnish youth from Americanization so that Finnish traditions and customs are not forgotten in the next generations. A song of praise is dedicated to the American James Earl Ray . Ray was charged with the murder of civil rights activist Martin Luther King in 1968 . In the song, the band thanks Ray in the name of the white race and transfigured the murder as an "act of liberation", although Ray himself denied the murder and, unlike the band, rejected the idea of white superiority until his own death. The song "Stadin Nr. 1" is dedicated to the sports club HIFK from Helsinki.
music
The band plays their songs in the genres of Oi-Punk, Hard Rock and Metal. The melodies are characterized by strong guitar riffs, catchy melodies with high recognition value and simple refrains. The texts are formulated briefly, but clear and radical in their message.
