K is the first studio album by the band Kraftklub , which was released on January 20, 2012. Stylistically, the album mixes indie rock and rap . The album reached number one in the German album charts at the beginning of February .

History of origin

After the release of the EP Adonis Maximus and initial successes in their home country, winning the Radio Prize New Music Award in September 2010 and their appearance at the Bundesvision Song Contest with the title I don't want to go to Berlin , major record labels became aware of the band. Eventually a contract was signed with Vertigo Records , a sub-label of Universal . According to their own information, the band has been working on their debut album since March 2011, for which singer Felix Brummer wrote all the lyrics.

Reviews

The album was recorded ambiguously, wrote Spiegel Online , that the songs are musically "simple to almost boring": " Hives , strokes , early Arctic Monkeys , in between a little German rap - the references can easily be counted on one hand." In contrast, one can hardly save oneself from pop quotes with the texts. The Cure and Morrissey , Tocotronic and Die Sterne , Josh Homme and the Gallagher Brothers : They all appear by name on the album. ”It would not need“ an album full of declarations of war, but for all their fearlessness and willingness to show, Kraftklub are surprisingly harmless . Moments of happy and disturbing nonsense, such as those produced by bands such as Frittenbude , Deichkind or Rocket Freudental , are in vain. ”The taz described the band members as hipsters from the East and wrote that“ they are rightly called the band of the hour, of the year or a generation ”. “In their songs they report about their living conditions. About people who, against their loneliness, watch three seasons of 'Dexter' in a row. About people who, when they are in love, constantly check the Facebook profile of those they are in love with. About people whose parents were once wilder than they could ever be. "On this point," no German band has portrayed everyday life between Mate Peng and retro checkout glasses for a long time. "

The Süddeutsche Zeitung commented that the new album “now combines the Berlin song and other songs”, “the fans have been shouting at the concerts for months, with a few new pearls. Kraftklub's language is just as simple and powerful as their music, underlaid with steep theses and a pun that is not too subtle, but all the more surprising - and always catchy. ”On Laut.de, Simon Langemann called the fusion of rap and rock as definitely successful: “The driving, no-frills instrumentals always turn out to be moody and danceable, but mainly use classic, straightforward indie rock and move between the Hives, Bloc Party and Mando Diao .” However, the album leaves mixed feelings: “On the one hand The boys' music for girls who the five people from Chemnitz claim to want to play convinces with high entertainment value and fun factor. With this debut at the latest, it seems to have been sealed that the newcomers will establish themselves within a very short time with their live sound. On the other hand, there is the fact that the 13 songs are simply too uniform in tempo and character to make a really timeless and exciting album. "In particular, the contract with the" major giant Universal "would do" anything but good "to their sound: “For a long time the instrumentals sound much too smooth and uniform, so that the pieces appear monotonous in the long run despite the entertaining songwriting. With a much more unpolished and above all more differentiated sound design, 'Mit K' could have grown into a top record [...]. "
