Mittelbach-Hengstbach refers to the southernmost district of Zweibrücken in Rhineland-Palatinate with the two localities Mittelbach and Hengstbach .

geography

Mittelbach lies in the valley of the Bickenalb at the confluence of the Rechental, Hengstbach in a side valley. While the floodplain with its rich meadows is suitable for cattle breeding, the valley slopes in the lower part are sandy and water-rich (Upper Buntsandstein ), on the plateau they are marly ( Lower Muschelkalk ) and suitable for arable farming. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the area was known as "cherry country".

history

Grave mounds in Mittelbühl in Mittelbach and the menhir in Hengstbach, which was removed after 1711 and recalled by a field and street name, indicate settlement in prehistoric times. An old Roman road ran up the hill, or in the Middle Ages the so-called "Dusser road", where salt was fetched from Duss . The two place names on “-bach” belong to a place name type that was often chosen during the early medieval development of the country. The written tradition begins in the 13th and 14th centuries.

Mittelbach

Former coat of arms of Mittelbach

Mittelbach is named together with Hengstbach in a detailed Zweibrücker deed of purchase in 1301, which already mentions field names. It seems uncertain whether a document from 1254 can be used for Mittelbach. Mittelbach was a church branch to Ixheim and later to Zweibrücken. In the Thirty Years' War the place died out completely after 1635 and stood desolate for decades. When he was visited around 1685, the ruins could hardly be found for the hedges and thorns.

A new settlement took place at the end of the 17th century. In 1737/38 the church was rebuilt. The bell from 1747 is exhibited in the anteroom of the Protestant State Church Archives in Speyer. With the intensification of agriculture at the end of the 18th century, more fruit trees, especially cherries, were planted. Industrial jobs have been created since the mid-19th century. The Mittelbach company mainly worked in the Roth, Heck & Schwinn wire drawing works in Ixheim. The 20th century hit the residents with the two-time separation of the Saarland , creating a customs border at the end of Mittelbach, the construction of the western wall from 1936/37, the evacuation in 1939/40 and again in 1944/45, finally the passage of the main battle line with the destruction of the Church 1945.

Hengstbach

Former coat of arms of Hengstbach

The place Hengstbach is mentioned in 1274 in a conciliation document of the Zweibrücken counts. In 1357, the place with seven farms had reached a size that corresponded to the size of the ban in the economy of that time. Hengstbach belonged to Mimbach and at times to Wattweiler . In the Thirty Years War everything died out here too. A family (Mattheiß Moschel) lived in the place alone at times. A new settlement took place at the beginning of the 18th century. Hengstbach stayed small and never owned a chapel. In 1745 it became part of the Mittelbach-Ixheim parish. The development in the 19th and 20th centuries ran parallel to the development in Mittelbach. The former "Hengstbacher Mühle" on the Bickenalb and the "Wahlerhof" belong to Hengstbach.

Mittelbach-Hengstbach

On June 7, 1969, the communities Mittelbach and Hengstbach merged to form the new community Mittelbach-Hengstbach, which has been a district of Zweibrücken since it was incorporated on April 22, 1972.

Economy and Transport

After the decline in agriculture, Mittelbach-Hengstbach has only a few jobs. The working people commute to Zweibrücken and other places. Conversely, the attractive residential area between 1950 and 2000 led to a large number of new buildings.
