Wattweiler (in the local dialect Wattwiller ) is the westernmost district of Zweibrücken in Rhineland-Palatinate . The Mölschbacherhof and the Kettersberger Hof belong to Wattweiler.

geography

Wattweiler lies in a side valley of the Blies . While the floodplain with its rich meadows is suitable for cattle breeding, the valley slopes in the lower part are sandy and water-rich (Upper Buntsandstein ), on the plateau they are marly ( Lower Muschelkalk ) and suitable for arable farming. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the area was known as "cherry country".

history

Burial mounds indicate settlement in prehistoric times. The place name on "-weiler" belongs to a place name type that was often chosen in the early Middle Ages . The written tradition begins in the 12th century. A priest and a distinguished man from Wattweiler attested to the confirmation document of the Wörschweiler monastery in 1180 . Wattweiler was thus already the seat of a parish.

After the precious Sasser Chronicle of Bernhart Hertzog the battle of 1276 will, in which Count Henry II. Of Zweibrücken defeated the Duke of Lorraine, on the Wattenweiler level have taken place. He may mix this up with the site of the battle that took place in 1413 between Count Palatine Stefan von Pfalz-Simmern-Zweibrücken and Nassau-Saarbrücken on the Wattweiler Höhe. In 1609 Wattweiler was Mimbach's branch . Only the family of Hofmann Johannes Klein on the Mölschbacher Hof survived the Thirty Years' War . The old tithe barn has been preserved, while the archway of the Gothic church was demolished in 1971.

A new settlement took place at the end of the 17th century. In 1715 a brickworks was built in the Wattweiler valley; The Kettersberger Hof was also built in the 18th century. With the intensification of agriculture at the end of the 18th century, more fruit trees, especially cherries, were planted. Since the middle of the 19th century, jobs in industry have been created primarily in nearby Zweibrücken.

In the 20th century, the inhabitants were confronted with the two-time separation of the Saarland , which resulted in a customs border at the end of Wattweiler, the construction of the western wall from 1936/37, the evacuation in 1939/40 and again in 1944/45, and finally the passage of the main battle line in 1945. The Mölschbacherhof was run as an independent village until January 15, 1963, at least as a civil registry office.

On April 22, 1972 Wattweiler was incorporated into Zweibrücken.
