The Mittelmosel Triathlon (MMT) is a triathlon event that has been held annually in and around Zell an der Mittelmosel since 2009 .

organization

The "MMT" is offered both as an Olympic distance (1.5 km swimming in the Moselle , 40 km cycling and 10 km running ) and as a sprint distance (0.75 km swimming, 20 km cycling and 5 km running).

In June 2009 the event was hosted for the first time by TSV Bullay-Alf . The sprint distance - referred to as the "Everyman's Triathlon" at the Mittelmosel Triathlon - was also held as a relay. In addition to 336 starters on the sprint route and the Olympic distance - professional soccer player Mirko Casper reached 29th place on the sprint route - 20 relays also competed. About 1000 spectators followed the competition.

In 2010, the second edition of the event was expanded to include a duathlon competition for pupils and young people , in which 68 participants started on the Saturday before the main event. This year the relay competition was held on both distances, so that in addition to 375 starters on the sprint route and the Olympic distance, there were also 20 relays.

The third edition of the triathlon event in 2011 was organized by TSV Bullay-Alf and SG Zell-Kaimt-Merl . For logistical reasons, the school and youth competitions have been removed from the program. In addition to 408 individual participants, 22 relays also started in 2011. The winner of 2009 and 2010, Tim Meyer, was unable to participate due to an injury.

In June 2012 the fourth edition of the triathlon took place, this year named “Paccor Mittelmosel Triathlon” after the main sponsor. The Rhineland-Palatinate Triathlon Association (RTV) rated the event on the sprint distance for the RTV league, and the Rhineland-Palatinate championships were also held on this route. Tim Meyer won his third start in Zell for the third time. Jürgen Zäck , who took part in the sprint competition, was disqualified, while the Ironman Hawaii winner of 2005, Faris Al-Sultan , took second place on the Olympic distance.

The route in the finish area was supported for the first time at the fifth Mittelmosel Triathlon in June 2013 by a bridge sponsored by a local roofing company. The 2nd Bundesliga started for the first time in Zell an der Mosel. Around 2000 spectators watched the race around the track. Oliver Strankmann took first place in the Olympic distance.

In 2014 Markus Fachbach from Kadenbach celebrated his first victory here.

In 2016 the race had to be held as a duathlon due to the weather (5.2 km running, 40 km cycling and 10.4 km running). There was no race here in 2018. The tenth event took place here on June 23, 2019.

Routing

  • The swimming course of the competition runs downstream from (depending on the discipline) two different starting points with a start on the banks of the Moselle in Zell-Kaimt . The water is accessed via wooden platforms. Since 2010 the race has started in a mass start . The water exit takes place on the opposite, right-hand side of the Moselle in the transition area at the Zell festival area.
  • After switching to bicycles, the triathletes first cross a narrow path through the “fan zone” of the town of Zell's fairground. Then you complete a distance of 20 km through the towns of Zell-Merl , Bullay and Zell-Barl , which is completely closed to motorized traffic , whereby the ascent to Zell-Barl includes overcoming 175 m of altitude, which is immediately downhill again become. The route crosses the Moselle twice over the Alf-Bullay double-decker bridge and the Zell car bridge back to the Zell festival area in the transition area. Short-distance athletes drive the circuit twice.
  • The event will run from the transition area in Zell completely along the banks of the Moselle on a closed cycle and hiking trail to the Merl district. There is a turning and refreshment point there. The length of the lap back to the so-called “fan zone” is around 5 km, so the starters also have to complete this lap twice over the short distance. In the last lap, the bridge that has already been crossed by bike leads to the finish.
