geography
Geographical location
The Wiwisee is located a few kilometers north of the Arctic Circle in the southern part of the Putorana Mountains on the upper reaches of the Wiwi River , a tributary of the Lower Tunguska . While it is fed by 33 rivers , the Wiwi is its only drain. The lake is about 255 m high and is around 88 km long and a maximum of 5 km wide. It is estimated that its maximum depth is between 80 and 200 m. Its catchment area is about 3,260 km². The mountains at the lake are 664 (southwest) to 1082 m (northeast) high. There are no settlements either by the lake or in its vicinity.
Geographical center of Russia
Shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union (1991), Russia's geographic center ( ⊙ ) was calculated. It lies on the south bank of the Wiwisees; this was officially recognized after verification by the State Office for Geodesy and Cartography. A 7 m high monument with an inscription was therefore erected there on August 21, 1992 . After the annexation of Crimea , another monument was erected a little further south.
Geology, flora and fauna
In the area of the little explored Wiwisees there is strong seismic activity due to a rift valley . Forests thrive on its banks. In the fish-rich lake, for example, perch fish , pike , salmon fish (such as whitefish or whitefish (see Coregonus ) as well as trout and char ) and sturgeon live ./
Chapel and cross
Near the geographic center of Russia, on the lake shore, made of wood, there is a chapel of the Russian Orthodox Church and a cross, which were consecrated on September 9, 2006 in honor of St. Sergius of Radonezh (1319–1392).
