description

The middle finger herb is a two year to short-lived perennial herbaceous plant reached, the plant height of 20 to 50 cm. The upright stem , rising at the base and already forked from far below, is richly leafed. At the bottom it has protruding hairs, at the top it is soft-haired to almost tomentose due to frizzy hair. The leaves are usually fingered in five parts, rarely in three parts. The leaflets are obovate, usually 2 to 4 cm long, deeply indented to pinnate and provided with three to six teeth on both sides. The leaves are dark green on the upper side, loosely hairy, gray-green underneath, moderately densely pubescent and have longer and stiffer simple hairs on the veins. The edge is not curled.

The flowers, which are 1 to 2 cm long, upright, tomentose-haired, have a diameter of about 10 mm. The outer sepals are narrow, elongated and as long as the calyx or a little longer. The upright sepals are 3 to 4 mm long at flowering time, later 5 to 7 mm long, triangular and very pointed. The five free petals are yellow, about 4 to 5 mm long and at most as long as the calyx. There are 20 stamens .

Middle cinquefoil flowers mainly from June to September. The pollination is done by insects.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28, 42 or 56.

Occurrence

General distribution

The original distribution area of the middle cinquefoil is in northeastern Europe and Siberia. Today it is introduced in northern, western and central Europe as well as in North America (often only as an inconsistent adventitious plant).

Distribution in Germany

The middle cinquefoil is mostly inconsistent and rare. Occurring very rarely, especially in the southern part of the area.

Location claims and socialization

Potentilla intermedia grows as a light and somewhat heat-loving plant on dry, predominantly sandy to gravelly, nutrient-rich, but often lime-poor locations, especially in loose ruderal corridors on paths as well as on port and railway areas. It occurs here in societies of the Berteroetum and Echio-Melilotetum and other societies of the association Dauco-Melilotion. Potentilla intermedia is often associated with the Norwegian cinquefoil ( Potentilla norvegica ).

Spread history

In Central Europe, Potentilla intermedia first appeared in northern Germany in 1825.
