Moamba is a district of the Maputo province in Mozambique with its seat in the eponymous town of Moamba .

The district borders on the Magude district in the north , the border forms the Rio Massintonto . In the west the district borders on the South African province of Mpumalanga , in the south on the districts Namaacha , Boane and Matola and in the east on the districts Matola and Marracuene . The district capital Moamba is located around 50 kilometers from the capital Maputo and 30 kilometers from the border with South Africa.

The Moamba District is 4,628 square kilometers and had a population of 62,392 people in 2005, which corresponds to a population density of 13.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. Compared to the 1997 population census - at that time there were 43,396 people in the Moamba district - the number has increased by 30.7 percent. The population is very young, around 40 percent of all residents are under 15 years of age and the majority are rural; around 26 percent live in urbanized areas.

Facilities and services

There are 77 schools in the Moamba district, 55 of which are primary schools ( escola do ensino primário ). There are also eight health centers for supplying the population.

The border town and administrative post of Ressano Garcia forms the economic center of the district. There are also branches of the banks BCI , Millennium bim and Barclays Mozambique , as well as numerous other shops at the Ressano Garcia / Komatipoort border crossing .

Administrative division

The Moamba district is divided into four administrative posts ( postos administrativos ):

  • Vila de Moamba with the surrounding villages of Moamba and Muzongo
  • Pesse with the surrounding villages of Mahulana and Vundiça
  • Vila de Ressano Garcia with the surrounding villages of Ressano Garcia and Regue
  • Sabié with the surrounding villages of Macaene, Malengane and Matunganhane

The Moamba district is crossed by the toll road EN4 , it connects the Maputo agglomeration with the industrial regions of South Africa to the west and is one of the busiest roads in the country.

In addition, the Pretoria – Maputo (Linha de Ressano Garcia) railway crosses the district along its entire length. There are daily regional trains between the border and the capital, Maputo. There are also two runways for small aircraft, one at Sabié and one at Corumana.
