Modest Butterer (also Modestus ; born March 17, 1738 in Metten , † March 22, 1784 in Salzburg ) was a Benedictine priest and legal scholar .

Life

Butterer graduated from high school and the philosophical studies. He entered the Benedictine monastery of St. Peter in Salzburg and took his religious vows on September 11, 1757 . In 1761 he was ordained a priest . He graduated on a study of law, which he in 1766 with the promotion of Dr. iur. completed. The disputation attended the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg Sigismund III. Christoph von Schrattenbach .

Smasher was still in 1766 a associate professor of canon law at the University of Salzburg , 1770 then full professor . In 1773 he was relieved of his teaching post, which made him sad in the following years.

Butterer was first the court master of the lordly noble boys and then confessor at the St. Georgen monastery in the town of the same name on the Längensee . However, in 1783 this monastery was closed. He then returned to Salzburg. There he became confessor of the Benedictine Abbey of Nonnberg .
