Modulus Guitars is an American manufacturer of musical instruments , best known for bass guitars made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The company name refers to the Young's modulus (ger .: Young's modulus) as CFRP has a particularly high modulus of elasticity.

background

Traditionally, electric guitars are made of hardwood and some are provided with an adjustable steel neck rod . However, the natural material wood is very inhomogeneous, so that the material properties such as density and rigidity are not constant over the guitar neck. In combination with the neck tensioning rod, this leads to volume and pitch fluctuations along the guitar neck. By replacing the wood with modern materials, this disadvantage should be eliminated. CFRP is particularly suitable here due to its high rigidity and low weight.

Company founder Geoff Gould originally works in the aviation industry, where he already gained experience with fiber-reinforced plastics. After his release, Gould, a passionate bass guitarist, experimented with the material for making guitar necks from CFRP hollow profiles. In 1977 he was able to present a first prototype at the fair. In 1978 he founded the Modulus Graphite company with some of his ex-colleagues , with which he produced guitar necks for other guitar manufacturers. Later the company started producing its own instruments and was renamed Modulus Guitars .

Since no new investor was found, the company had to close at the beginning of 2013 due to the poor economic situation.

Established in 2014

In 2014 it became known that Modulus guitars would again be produced in small numbers. The exclusive instruments can be ordered from the Planet Bass website .
