Mohammad ad-Daʿayyaʿ (محمد عبد العزيز الدعيع, DMG Muḥammad ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ad-Daʿaiyaʿ , based on the English transcription Mohammad Al-Deayea ; * August 2, 1972 in Ha'il ) is a former Saudi Arabian soccer goalkeeper . With 178 international matches, he was the world record holder among the male national players until February 27, 2012 . He remains the goalkeeper with the most international matches.

National team career

ad-Daʿayyaʿ made his debut on September 24, 1990 for the Saudi Arabian national team in a 4-0 victory over Bangladesh . He actually wanted to be a handball player in the past, but his brother Abdullah was able to convince him to play football. In 1996 he won the Asian Football Championship with his country , where he was able to parry several balls in the final on penalties against the UAE and thus rose to become a hero. He also took part in four world championships ( 1994 , 1998 , 2002 and 2006 ), but was not used in 2006 and then declared his national team career over. So it remained at 10 World Cup games, with the move into the round of 16 at the 1994 World Cup (1: 3 against Sweden) being the greatest success. In the first group game of the 2002 World Cup, he conceded eight goals against Germany . Since he had to reach behind him four times in the following two group games, he set the negative record of Antonio Carbajal , who had the most with 25 goals conceded at world championships to date.

With his 165th game on June 6, 2002, he first became the Asian record holder with the most international matches. From February 14, 2006, when he played his 174th international match , and exceeded Claudio Suárez 's record, he was the world record holder among the male national team. By May 11, 2006, he expanded the record to 178 international matches. In various statistics, he was also listed with 181 international matches. As of August 31, 2009, FIFA recognized only 177 games, and since October 6, 2010, 178 games have been listed. This was based on a misunderstanding, because three games that Abdullah ad-Daʿayyaʿ played at the Asian Games in 1990 were attributed to Mohammad. On June 1, 2006 Suárez set Mohammad's record with his 178th international match, but FIFA only counted 177 caps for Suárez. On February 27, 2012, the Egyptian Ahmed Hassan became the new record holder with his 179th international match.

Club career

ad-Daʿayyaʿ played for al-Hilal since January 2000 ; previously he was active for Al-Ta'ee . In 2001 he was about to sign a contract with Manchester United , but was not given a work permit. On June 22, 2010, ad-Daʿayyaʿ ended his active career. He won three championship titles and five cup victories with al-Hilal and ended his career in 2010 as captain of his club.
