Mohamed Seddik Benyahia (other spelling: Muhammad Siddiq Bin Yahya ) ( Arabic محمد الصديق بن يحي) (Born January 30, 1932 in Jijel , Jijel Province ; † May 3, 1982 on the Iraqi - Iranian border in a plane crash ) was an Algerian politician and most recently foreign minister .

Life

After attending school, he studied at the University of Algiers , where he became President of the Union of Algerian Muslim Students. As an early member of the Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN), he first became a representative in Indonesia in 1956 , before becoming a representative of the FLN in the United Kingdom in the course of the Algerian War and efforts to achieve sovereignty .

He later played a prominent role as a member of the delegation that reached an agreement with France on the independence of Algeria with the signing of the Treaties of Évian on March 18, 1962. Then he belonged to the committee of the FLN, which worked out with the Charter of Tripoli for the future socialist policy of Algeria.

Over the next few years he was first special envoy in the Soviet Union and then successively Minister of Information (1967 to 1971), Minister of Education (1971 to 1977) and finally Minister of Finance (1977 to 1979) during the tenure of President Houari Boumedienne .

After President Chadli Bendjedid took office on February 9, 1979, he finally succeeded Abd al-Aziz Bouteflika as foreign minister and held this office until his death. He eventually played a key role in the negotiations for the release of US embassy staff during the Tehran hostage-taking after November 4, 1979.
