Mohnenberg

The Mohnberg is from red sandstone constructed mountain in the often called Wasgau (French: Vasgovie) named northern part of the Vosges in the Bas-Rhin (Lower Rhine) a few kilometers south of the border with Germany and the Palatinate Forest . With a height of 547 meters (according to other maps 550 m) it is one of the higher peaks in this region (the highest point on the Alsatian side is the Grand Wintersberg (German: Großer Wintersberg) northwest of Niederbronn-les-Bains with a height of 581 m ).

location

The Mohnenberg lies in the area of the municipality of Lembach , but much closer to Niedersteinbach in the north of the mountain. Unlike Niedersteinbach, which only came back to France from Bavaria in 1825 through a border correction, it is located in the area that remained with France after the Second Peace of Paris in 1815.

tourism

The wooded Mohnenberg falls with around 300 m high steep slopes to the valley of the Steinbach , a tributary of the Sauer . The easiest access is from the east via the Hohwardt Pass.
