history

Mohun Bagan is one of the oldest football clubs in Asia . It was founded on August 15, 1889 and was named National Club of India in 1989, honoring the 1911 team that defeated the British in the IFA Shield at the time. This event is of great importance for the association, as it expressed the rebellion against British colonial rule . The first president of this association was Bhupendra Nath Bose , who was also president of the Indian National Congress . Mohun Bagan Club has a soccer academy in collaboration with the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) in Durgapur . On May 27, 2008 Mohun Bagan played against the German record champions FC Bayern Munich on the occasion of his trip to Asia. It was the last game for goalkeeper Oliver Kahn and coach Ottmar Hitzfeld . Mohun Bagan lost 3-0.

After a 4th place in the 2007/08 season, the club finished the 2008/09 season in second place. The club played in the Indian I-League and was banned from the I-League on December 29, 2012 due to ongoing fan riots until 2015. How the club will continue was open at the time. The ban was later lifted, however Mohun Bagan AC had to pay a fine and they lost all points. However, they were entitled to play all the games still to be played during the season.
