Mokoma is a Finnish thrash metal band from Lappeenranta .

Tuomo Saikkonen and Kuisma Aalto

Mokoma was originally founded by Marko Annala in 1996 as a solo project, but was soon expanded to include a full line-up. Initially, the sound of their songs was based more on traditional rock and grunge with only minor influences from the metal area, which earned them a record deal with EMI . The first two albums Valu and Mokoman 120 päivää , however, did not sell well. When they suggested to the label to play Finnish-language Thrash Metal instead of rock music, their contract was terminated immediately.

Since they could not find a suitable replacement label , the band members founded Sakara Records in 2003 (meanwhile also represents the bands Diablo , Stam1na and Rytmihäiriö ). In the same year they released their third album Kurimus , which is considered the first thrash metal album in Finnish. Initially it only sold 200 copies, but with the help of the freely distributed MP3 single Takatalvi and word of mouth, the band gained a higher profile in the metal sector, whereupon the sales of the album increased to several thousand pieces. Numerous tours soon made the band better known. While they were playing in front of a hundred people in a small rock bar at the Kurimus release party in April 2003 , when the tour ended six months later in November, the concert in Tavastia was sold out.

In May 2004 the next album Tämän maailman ruhtinaan hovi was released . It debuted at number two on the Finnish album charts and sold nearly 10,000 copies. The leading Finnish metal magazine Inferno voted the album "Album of the Year". Mokoma was also named "Band of the Year" at the Finnish Metal Awards, and her album was named "Album of the Year" and was nominated for the Emma Award .

At Christmas 2004, they released a self-titled live DVD, which entered the Finnish DVD charts at number one, sold more than 5,000 copies and reached gold status.

In February 2006 the band released their fifth album Kuoleman Laulukunnaat , which was recorded at the Music Bros. studio in Imatra. Right before the release, the band was on the covers of all major rock magazines in Finland. In the first week, every fifth music album bought in Finland was theirs, which also meant an immediate entry to number one on the Finnish charts. At the Finnish Metal Awards they were nominated for “Album of the Year” and “Cover of the Year” and received both awards. In addition, this album was again nominated for an Emma. In November 2006 the band toured Finland together with Stam1na and Rytmihäiriö. A DVD was recorded at Nosturi in Helsinki , Teatria in Oulu and Rytmikorjaamo in Seinäjoki , which was released in May 2007. Also in May 2007, the band's own label Sakara Records entered into a partnership with ZYX Music subsidiary Golden Gore Records , which released Kuoleman Laulukunnaat as its first album in German-speaking countries on June 8, 2007 .

The recordings for the next album began in August 2007. Luihin ja ytimiin was released on November 28, 2007 and went straight to number one on the Finnish album charts. At the Finnish Metal Awards, which were presented in February 2008 as part of the Finnish Metal Expo , the band received the awards for "Album of the Year" and "Cover of the Year". Singer Marko Annala was also voted "Singer of the Year". Mokoma was also nominated for an Emma in the category “Best Metal Album” ( Luihin ja ytimiin ) alongside Nightwish , Amorphis and Apocalyptica . The band performed at the gala on March 8, 2008, which is seen by around half a million Finns each year. In June 2008 Mokoma received a gold record for the album Kuoleman laulukunnaat for 15,000 units sold. The album Sydänjuuret and the single Viides Vuodenaika also received a gold record.
