Diablo is a thrash metal band from Finland that was founded in 1995 . Originally the band was called "Diablo Brothers". Her albums Mimic47 from 2006 and Silvër Horizon from 2015 reached number one on the Finnish album charts.

history

The founding members include Rainer Nygård ( vocals , guitar ) and Marko Utriainen (guitar), who have previously played with the thrash metal band Armatage . The bassist Aadolf Virtanen (previously with Dehydrated ) and the drummer Timo Kemppainen joined them. After their three demo recordings , the band released the self-financed EP Princess in 1999 , which was immediately licensed by the music label Poko Rekords .

In 2000 the first album Elegance in Black was released . The album includes a cover version of the ABBA song "Dancing Queen". In the following years Diablo only played a few concerts in Finland. Drummer Timo Kemppainen left the band in the meantime and was replaced by Heikki Malmberg.

Two years later, the band released the album Renaissance , which reached number 14 in the Finnish charts . The Finnish rapper “Paleface” can be heard as a guest musician . The band shot their first music video for the song "Angel" . Afterwards the band played at many summer festivals in Finland, u. a. at the Tuska Festival in Helsinki . For financial reasons and because of the musicians' professions, there was no nationwide tour.

In 2004 the band made their breakthrough in Finland with the album Eternium . The video clip for the single Read My Scars was broadcast frequently on Finland's most popular music show “Levyraati” and helped the single to third place in the charts. The album was released on January 19, 2004 and also reached number three in the charts. This success made the band interesting for many European record companies. The German record company Drakkar Entertainment , which released the album in Germany in autumn 2004 , was awarded the contract.

Her new album Mimic47 was released on February 24, 2006 . The title song was released as a single in Finland in November 2005 and reached number one in the single charts. The accompanying video also had a very high TV airplay . On the B-side of the single you can hear a cover version of the Duran Duran song A View to a Kill . In Finland, the album went straight to number one on the charts, displacing Madonna from the top position. The album title Mimic47 refers to a doping scandal in which several members of the Finnish Nordic national ski team were involved. The number 47 corresponds to the number of urine samples that were taken for processing.

In April 2006 the first two studio albums were released for the first time in German-speaking countries. During Popkomm 2006 Diablo played their first concert outside of Finland. In February 2007, Diablo toured Germany for the first time as a support act for Tarot . On July 15, 2007, Diablo played with HIM as the opening act for the Metallica concert in Helsinki.

Since the end of January 2008 the band recorded their fifth studio album in the Fantom studio in Tampere , which was released in August 2008 in Germany. The album was released in Finland by Sakara Records and is called Icaros . A tour with Children of Bodom and Cannibal Corpse followed in early 2009 .

Despite these successes, every band member has a regular job. The drummer Heikki Malmberg earns his living by taking drum lessons.

After a long break, the band's sixth studio album, Silvër Horizon , was released in 2015 . It was released on September 18 in Finland, where it reached number one on the album charts. The publication in other European countries followed on 30 October 2015 on the content, the album based science fiction - epic poem Aniara the Swedish writer Harry Martinson .

style

The basis for the music of Diablo is the classic Bay Area Thrash Metal. Bands like Metallica , Slayer and Testament in particular exert a great influence on the band. Other influences are the death metal band Death and the progressive metal band Queensryche . Since the album Eternium , more modern influences from bands like Machine Head or Fear Factory have been added.

Every Diablo album contains a self-written song, the title of which is taken from a Coroner song. In this way, Diablo pay tribute to their great role models. Another tradition is the printing of the Chuck Schuldiner quote "Let the metal flow" in the booklets of the Diablo albums. All music and lyrics are written by guitarists Rainer Nygård and Marko Utriainen.
