Moments from Eden -

Moments from Eden is the second EP by the British band Ultravox . The recordings were made on April 23 and 24, 2010 in the Hamburg venue Große Freiheit 36 and in the Berlin Admiralspalast as part of the Return to Eden Part II concert series , which in 2010 led through Great Britain and other European countries. A year earlier, the band made a comeback tour with the line-up Midge Ure , Billy Currie , Chris Cross and Warren Cann and later released the accompanying live album Return to Eden - Live at the Roundhouse .

The EP was released as a limited Ultimate Deluxe Edition on a CD and a 10 ″ record with four tracks each.

Track list

  1. New Europeans - 5:03
  2. Mr X - 7:09
  3. White China - 4:01
  4. Love's Great Adventure - 4:44

The first and third tracks were recorded in Hamburg and the other two in Berlin.

Mr. X is the version of Mr. X sung in German by Warren Cann during the soundcheck . On the other hand, the instrumentation comes from the later concert, in which Cann performed the English original according to the setlist . The studio version of Mr. X can be found as a bonus track on the EMI Gold Edition (2000) and Remastered Definitive Edition (2008) of the album Vienna as well as on the compilation album Rare Vol. 1 (1993).

design

The British graphic designer Rian Hughes was responsible for the artistic design . The gatefold cover contains the booklet and the vinyl edition in the two pockets , while the CD is attached on the right inside. The cover and booklet are made of high quality cardboard and paper with a ribbed texture . The color composition is made up of black, red, white and gray, with black and red dominating as colors. Both the CD and the semi-transparent record are also in red. The font used was Korolev , a creation by Hughes' own label Device Fonts .

The embossed cover picture shows the band name and the four song titles as well as a photograph of the Berlin TV tower that Hughes took in 2006 on the occasion of his participation in the TYPO Berlin design conference . Further photographs of architectural city motifs were taken at the House of World Cultures as well as in New York City and Oslo . In the booklet, the avant-garde alienated photos are linked with quotes from the four lyrics. The design is reminiscent of the earlier Ultravox albums Quartet and Monument - The Soundtrack . In several places on the cover and record there are also the Roman dates MCMLXXX and MCMLXXXI (1980 and 1981). The original intention was to refer to the two years of publication of the original title. Hughes later admitted his mistake, as both White China and Love's Great Adventure came out in 1984, while New Europeans and Mr X were appropriately taken from the 1980 album Vienna .

Also included in the scope of delivery is a similar style artwork printed on glossy A4 photo paper . The vertically mirrored image picks up on the subject from the back of the cover and shows in the middle a schematic male person with an X instead of the head. Hughes was influenced in the design by the comic series Mister X by the Canadian comic author Dean Motter , who in turn mentions the Ultravox song Mr. X as a source of inspiration for his works. As a reminiscence of the studio album Rage in Eden , released about 30 years earlier, the distinctive three-horse logo can be seen on the lapel of the person depicted.

Publications

The EP was initially released on March 27, 2011 on online music services . On May 2nd, the limited and artistically enhanced edition appeared as a combined CD and 10 "vinyl version.

In addition, the song The Thin Wall (6:26) , which was also recorded in Berlin, is exclusively available from iTunes online .
