Mondovi is located on the Buffalo River , which flows into the Mississippi about 36 km southwest . This forms the border between Wisconsin and Minnesota . The geographical coordinates of Mondovi are 44 ° 34'8 "north latitude and 91 ° 40'11" west longitude. The urban area extends over an area of 9.7 km², which consists almost exclusively of land.
US Highway 10 , which runs in an east-west direction and crosses Wisconsin Highway 37 in the city center, runs through Mondovi .
The closest major cities are Eau Claire (39.3 km northeast), La Crosse (126 km south), Rochester , Minnesota (121 km southwest), and the Twin Cities ( Minneapolis and Saint Paul ) in Minnesota (136 km west-northwest Direction).
history
In 1855 the first white settlers came to the area. In 1857 a small general store, a hotel and a saloon were opened. A mill was also built in the same year. A forge was added and a post office was opened around 1858. The first marriage in Mondovi was in 1858.
In 1859 Mondovi had several shops, two hotels, three churches, a school building, two mills and a newspaper. A census in 1885 counted 340 residents, almost originally from New England and other east coast states.
