Monerac

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Monerac is a red wine variety , a new breed between the Grenache x Aramon varieties . The crossing took place in 1960 by the French ampelographer Paul Truel in the Domaine de Vassal, a branch of the Institut National de la Recherche en Agronomie of the University of Montpellier . The Gramon grape variety originated from the same cross. Monerac makes light red wines of average quality and is more commonly used to make rosé wine . Although Monerac has been one of the recommended grape varieties in France since 1982, it has not yet caught on.

The clone 0536 is approved for commercial cultivation in France . Smaller experimental crops are known in Canada.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy with white wool (almost tomentose) and light green in color. The young leaves are green in color.
  • The leaves are three-lobed and slightly curved (see also the article leaf shape ). The stem bay is closed. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are set medium-wide compared to other grape varieties.
  • The cylindrical grape is medium-sized (approx. 267 grams per grape) and has dense berries. The round berries are medium-sized (2.7 grams on average) and black and blue in color.

The variety sprouts early and is therefore sensitive to late spring frosts. It ripens about 30 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen late. Monerac is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
