The Mont d'Amin is a mountain peak in the Swiss Jura with a height of 1417  m above sea level. M. The summit is on the commune of Val-de-Ruz (until 2012 Chézard-Saint-Martin ) in the canton of Neuchâtel , around 10 km north of the city of Neuchâtel and around five kilometers east of the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds . The name Amin is first mentioned in 1150 as apud Amens , which means something like for the people of Amo / Hamo .

location

The Mont d'Amin is part of a Jura chain that extends in a south-west-north-east direction from Mont Racine over the Tête de Ran , the Vue des Alpes to the Chasseral . The ridge is bounded in the south by the valley basin of the Val de Ruz , in the west by the Vue des Alpes pass and in the north by the Le Convers depression , which is part of the westernmost section of the Vallon de Saint-Imier . The eastern border is defined by a line from the height of Les Vieux Prés over the Pertuis gorge to Derrière Pertuis . In front of the Mont d'Amin to the south is the slope shoulder of the Montagne de Cernier and Montagne de Chézard at an average of 1200  m .

geology

In structural and geological terms, the Mont d'Amin forms an anticline of the Jura folds . In the course of time, the vault, made of competent limestone from the younger Jurassic period , was attacked at weak points by erosion and partially removed. This exposed the underlying softer rock layers. The ridge of Mont d'Amin today represents the steep southern limb of the anticline. At a distance of about 1.5 km, the wooded northern limb ( ridge of Envers de Convers , up to 1231  m above sea level ) is parallel to Mont d'Amin . ). In between, from south to north, are La Chaux d'Amin , Montperreux ( 1,373  m above sea level ) and Grand 'Combe . La Chaux d'Amin and Grand 'Combe are valley furrows that were created by the erosion of the soft marly layers of rock, while the Montperreux is the next deeper hard limestone layer.

At an altitude of 1395  m on the Mont d'Amin lies an erratic block that was brought here from the Rhone Glacier during the Riss glaciation. It is the highest erratic block that has been found on the Jura so far. Based on this location one can get an idea of the thickness of the Rhone Glacier during the maximum freezing in the foothills of the Alps.

Land cover

On the ridges of Mont d'Amin and Montperreux there are extensive Jura high pastures with mighty spruce trees that stand either individually or in groups; steeper slopes are wooded. The Mont d'Amin is a popular hiking area and a beautiful viewpoint near the cities of Neuchâtel and La Chaux-de-Fonds.
