geography
Montmin is located at 1045 m , north of Faverges , about 15 km southeast of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The mountain village extends in a valley which opens to the south, east of the Lac d'Annecy , at the foot of the Bornes Alps belonging Tournette .
In addition to the actual town center, Montmin also included various hamlet settlements and farms, including:
- Plan Montmin ( 1000 m ) on a ledge above the valley of Montmin
- La Perrière ( 950 m ) in the high valley below Montmin
- Le Bois ( 1060 m ) in the high valley at the foot of the Tournette
- Les Prés Ronds ( 1240 m ) at the end of the high valley, at the foot of the Tournette
Neighboring towns of Montmin are Talloires in the north, Les Clefs , Serraval and Saint-Ferréol in the east, Faverges in the south and Doussard in the west.
history
The place was probably built in the 12th century shortly after the Talloires monastery was founded. The place name Montmin is derived from the Latin words monte medio (middle mountain), although the name Mont Mayri recorded in old maps could indicate a different, possibly pre-Roman origin.
The municipality of Montmin was merged with the former municipality of Talloires with effect from January 1, 2016 and merged to form the Commune nouvelle Talloires-Montmin . It belonged to the Arrondissement of Annecy and the Canton of Faverges .
Attractions
The village church of Saint-Maurice, which is very spacious for a small mountain village, was rebuilt in 1848 in the neoclassical style on the site of a previous building. The monument and chapel of Sept-Fontaines in the hamlet of Plan Montmin date from the 17th century. The chapel of Le Bois was built in 1716.

In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 there were still 548 inhabitants in Montmin). Due to its remoteness, the population of Montmin, in contrast to other municipalities in the area, has also declined overall in recent decades. Since 2000, however, there has been significant population growth again.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Montmin was a predominantly agricultural village. Today there are some local small businesses. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. In recent years, Montmin has also benefited from tourism. The village is the starting point for climbing the Tournette.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Talloires over the Col de la Forclaz and Montmin to Vesonne (near Faverges).
