Morgenstern is a former metal - band from Bad Salzungen in Thuringia. The band played medieval rock with German lyrics.

Band history

The band was founded on February 28, 1998 by Jens “Yenser” Hülpüsch (guitar), Matthias “Ulli” Ullmann (vocals, drums), Susanne Kley (vocals, flute, clarinet) and Steffen Richter (bass). A little later, Dirk Necke (keyboards, Schalmei ) joined them. After the demo Hexenhammer , released on March 16, the band has some appearances in Thuringia, Hesse and Saxony in the opening act of various medieval rock and folk metal bands such as Subway to Sally , Skyclad , Inchtabokatables and Mutabor . With Manuel “Maan Man” Möckel a second guitarist was added. After the release of the second demo, Operie Femina , the band received a recording contract with the Austrian independent label Napalm Records in 1999, which was actually better known in the metal scene for black metal . In 2000 the debut album Feuertaufe was released .

The album Today is Die Rache mein the band played in 2001 with the line-up Rico Ihling (vocals), Matthias Ullmann (drums), Susanne Kley (wind instruments), Dirk Necke (wind instruments), Jens Hülpüsch (guitar) and Jörg Hülpüsch (bass ) a. The album was far worse in the metal press than its predecessor. Rock Hard magazine even named the album “Ass Bomb of the Month”, the magazine's name for the worst release of the month according to critics. The album Rausch followed in 2002 . In 2003 the band performed at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen (WGT).

After the Mexico tour in 2004 and the release of the fourth album Fuego , produced by Alexander Krull ( Atrocity ), Rico Ihling, Matthias "Ulli" Ullmann, Susanne Kley and Dirk Necke left the band due to musical and personal differences. They then founded the band Solar Plexus , which released two albums on STF Records . Since Jens and Jörg Hülpüsch did not want Morgenstern to die, they reorganized the group. From 2005 onwards, in addition to the Hülpüsch brothers, Chrissi Vogt played in Morgenstern on keyboards , Karsten Schwantes on drums , and Tino Saabel on guitar and vocals. An album was announced in this line-up, but it was never released. In fact, there was a reunion in the founding line-up in 2008, but with drummer Frank Albrecht, who joined from Solar Plexus. The last album Geister was released in 2009 as an in-house production. The band broke up a year later.

Matthias "Ulli" Ullmann died at the age of 40 on June 17, 2012 in an accident at work.

Music genre

Morgenstern played medieval metal in the style of well-known models such as Subway to Sally and In Extremo . Not only, but especially Rock Hard complained about the band's lack of independence and pressure. Some of the sound carriers were also reminiscent of German rock . With the album Rausch , the band was able to reconcile some critics.

Lyrically, they used less medieval themes, but wrote the texts against a modern background or looked for themes that are universally valid. The text content was then brought into a text form that looked like a medieval era. From Rausch on , the band tried to deal with the themes of love and sex. With the album Fuego they tried to drive a more metal- oriented style, but remained rooted in the medieval style. An announced change of style towards hard rock and metal during the separation period was never perpetuated on an album. After the reunion they tried to get back to the time before Fuego .
