Moritz Georg Weidmann (publisher, 1686)
Moritz Georg Weidmann (born January 23, 1686 in Leipzig ; † May 3, 1743 in Dresden ) was a German bookseller and publisher operating in Leipzig .
Life
Moritz Georg Weidmann was the son of the publisher of the same name , who entered the Leipzig book trade after completing an apprenticeship in bookselling in Frankfurt am Main . The father died when little Moritz Georg was only seven years old. A year later, the mother married the Leipzig bookseller Johann Ludwig Gleditsch . He took over the management of the bookstore, which was now run as Johann Ludwig Gleditsch & Moritz Georg Weidmann . Gleditsch gave his stepson a good education and, to graduate, sent him to Holland for a long time , where he himself had already been. Weidmann did law studies here and looked around the book trade.
In 1713 Moritz Georg Weidmann joined the Leipzig bookstore as a partner and took it over completely in 1717 after Gleditsch had developed into a flourishing company. Weidmann expanded the publishing house and founded branches abroad. He enjoyed a great reputation beyond his publishing house. August the Strong appointed him Royal Polish and Electoral Saxon Court and Excise Officer to the City of Leipzig and Real Secret Chamberlain . He was also the Princely Saxon-Gotha agent in Leipzig . The baroque Weidmannsche Garten in Leipzig was one of his possessions .
Since Weidmann did not leave a son when he died in 1743, the business went to his widow and only daughter, Marie Louise. In Philipp Erasmus Reich they found a capable manager who successfully continued the publishing house.
