Life

Moriz von Rauch came from a Heilbronn industrial family and was the son of the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, Friedrich von Rauch . He grew up in the Rauch'schen Palais on Heilbronner Marktplatz and attended the Heilbronner Gymnasium , where he passed the final exam in 1887. He then attended lectures in literature, art and cultural history at the University of Munich with Richard Muther, among others . In 1889 he moved to Berlin University , where he mainly attended lectures in history and art history, among others with Herman Grimm . In 1890 he returned to Heilbronn, where he began commercial training in his parents' company. When his father died in August of the same year, he turned his back on the commercial profession and returned to Berlin, where he continued his history studies. In 1893 he followed Albert Naudé as a doctoral student at the University of Marburg , where he completed his studies with a thesis on the politics of Hessen-Kassel in the War of the Austrian Succession . During his student days, he traveled extensively across Europe. In 1898 he became a silent partner in his parents' company, so that his supply was secured and he did not have to pursue a state examination , but instead was able to pursue his own historical research and other extensive trips as a private scholar . In 1899 he went on an eight-month trip to South America .

As a historian, he initially dealt with various Württemberg topics before finally concentrating entirely on the history of Heilbronn. Rauch has especially written historical sources evaluated while deep mistrust of the same time in Heilbronn of Alfred Schliz operated Archeology cherished. In 1900 he was entrusted with editing the document book of the city of Heilbronn , which had been published in several volumes by the Württemberg Commission for State History and started by Eugen Knupfer . Although Knupfer was considered a conscientious processor, he was stuck in the middle of his doctoral thesis and had no longer met the deadline requests of the commission. The processing of the period from 1476 to 1532, which was assigned to Moriz von Rauch and which finally filled three volumes of the document book instead of one, occupied him for more than two decades, during which he visited the neighboring Heilbronn City Archives on a daily basis or made trips to other archives. where further documents on the history of Heilbronn were kept. During his work on the document book, von Rauch wrote countless articles on the history of the city, especially on the Reformation period, which he examined. In his archive research he was able to prove that Hans Seyfer was the artist of the high altar in Heilbronn's Kilian Church in 1909 . As the only independent work besides the document books, he also wrote a family history of the von Rauch family during the First World War .

The 1913 published until 1922 Volumes 2 to 4 of the document book of the city of Heilbronn are now considered his most important work and provide for the loss of much of the Heilbronner archival when air strike on Heilbronn on 4 December 1944, a valuable source material on the history of the city of Heilbronn . Of It is thanks in particular to Rauch's work that the eventful city history during the Reformation period remained largely accessible despite the loss of many original documents.

In 1915 von Rauch was appointed to succeed Alfred Schliz on the board of directors of the Heilbronn Historical Society , which he headed in a sovereign and patriarchal manner according to a later self-account of the society . A large part of his regional historical writings were also first published by this association. From 1924 until his death in 1928 he was in charge of the Heilbronn City Archives as a part-time archivist . In addition, he had numerous awards and other offices, including a member of the Commission for State History, a member of the Committee for the Association for Wuerttemberg Church History and a curator at the Office for Monument Preservation. He was succeeded by Georg Albrecht as Heilbronn city archivist and later also chairman of the historical association .
