Mortal Sin is an Australian thrash metal band from the Sydney area .

Band history

Mortal Sin was founded in 1985 by Mat Maurer (vocals) and Wayne Campbell. Together with guitarists Keith Krstin and Paul Carwana, as well as bassist Andy Eftichiou, they recorded the debut album Mayhemic Destruction and released it through their own distribution. The Metallica- inspired Speed and Thrash Metal aroused the interest of the major label Phonogram , which took it up in 1987 and published it worldwide with modified cover artwork. Keith Krstin dropped out after the admission and made way for Mick Burke (ex- Slaughter Lord ). In 1988, Mortal Sin went on a support tour for Metallica.

In 1989 Face of Despair , the second album of Mortal Sin, was released. A European tour in the opening act for Testament and Faith No More follows the publication. However, there was also a substitution here, Steve Hughes, another ex-member of Slaughter Lord, took over the drums. After returning from Europe, Maurer also left the band, which was about to break up.

With a completely new line-up Andy Eftichiou released the third album Every Dog has its Day (in Australia: Rebellious Youth ) via Music for Nations . The music has little to do with the original style of the band, Mortal Sin now played more commercial Power Metal , which nevertheless remained unsuccessful. In addition, Eftichiou was sued by his ex-members, who filed legal claims on the band name. The band broke up unsuccessfully.

In 1996, Mortal Sin reformed the line-up Maurer, Campbell, Eftichiou and Carwana with Anthony Hoffman from Campbell's band Grungeon. This line-up didn't last long either: Carawana dropped out at relatively short notice and made way for Troy Scerri, a member of Campbell's second band White Trash . After the EP Revolution of the Mind and an unsuccessful tour, the band broke up again.

In 2004 there was a second reunion, this time with the ex-members Campbell, Maurer and Eftichou, supplemented by the two guitarists Joe Buttigieg and Mick Sultana, both of whom were previously with Addictive . A DVD with recordings of the first concert was self-distributed in 2004. After being inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Brain & Kerrang Australian Heavy Metal Music Awards , Campbell and Buttigieg dropped out again. Luke Cook (drums) and Nathan Shea (guitar) are now playing on the Australian tour with Anthrax . Both are still in the band today. A new studio album entitled An Absence of Faith was released in 2007 in Germany via Armageddon Music . In the same year, an official “ bootleg ” was released with the title Mortal Thrashing Mad . In 2008 Mortal Sin played a European tour in the opening act for Overkill and played at various festivals such as Wacken Open Air and Jalometalli . In 2009 a tour through South America followed, during which u. a. Daycore was involved as the opening act.

Mortal Sin broke up for good shortly after Mat Maurer left in May 2012.

Music genre

Although the two albums Mayhemic Destruction and Face of Despair sound very influenced by Metallica, the band initially resisted this characterization:

It's almost impossible not to be compared to Metallica. Just because Metallica play the way they want to play and have a variable style doesn't mean that they are the only ones allowed to. "

- Wayne Campbell in the Thunderbolt fanzine

The Christian elements, for example the cross in the band logo, as well as the partially Christian lyrics are a specialty of Thrash Metal, which is otherwise mainly critical to religion .
