Slaughter Lord was an Australian death and thrash metal band from Sydney , which was founded in 1985 under the name Onslaught , then changed its name to Devastator and disbanded after renaming it again in 1987.

history

The band was founded in May 1985 by drummer Steve Hughes under the name Onslaught. However, since there was already an English thrash metal band of the same name , the band soon renamed itself to Devastator before they decided on the name Slaughter Lord. In addition to Hughes, the group consisted of guitarist Mick Burke, bassist Tony Noel, guitarist Sandy Vahdanni and singer Colin Butcher. The latter was briefly replaced by Claws Mayhem, before he also left the band after a few weeks. While Noel took over the vocals, guitarist Vahdanni was replaced by Anton Vazquez. Vahdanni would later join the sadistic execution . In February 1986, the band made their first gig and recorded their first demo, Taste of Blood . Other appearances followed along with Mortal Sin and Massappeal . In 1987 the band broke up again. In 1998 Invictus Productions released the compilation Thrash 'Til Death 86-87 . In their career the band only played about 20 concerts, most of them in Sydney. In addition to the demo releases and the compilation, there is a split release with Morbid Angel in circulation, which is traded as a bootleg .

meaning

The Encyclopedia of Australian Heavy Metal counted the band alongside Mortal Sin among the first Australian extreme metal bands. The group Gospel of the Horns, along with Corpse Molestation / Bestial Warlust , Sadistik Exekution , Necrotomy , Acheron , Hobbs' Angel of Death and Mortal Sin, are among the early Australian representatives in extreme metal. Athenar from the band Midnight counted Slaughter Lord next to Hobbs' Angel of Death, Taipan , Rose Tattoo , X , Fun Things , Razar , The Angels and Sadistik Exekution to the better known Australian bands. Erik Danielsson from Watain called the band an important part of the old Australian metal scene alongside Mortal Sin, Bestial Warlust, Spear of Longinus , Martire and Sadistik Exekution . He also lists Slaughter Lord as an important group for the members of Watain, alongside bands such as Bathory , Dissection , old Samael , Blasphemy and Mortuary Drape . KK Warslut from Deströyer 666 also counted the band among the first Australian extreme metal representatives, alongside bands such as Hobbs' Angel of Death, Mortal Sin, Sadistik Exekution, Disembowelment and Incubus . Thornspawn , Undead Creep , Dissection, and Hellish Crossfire include Slaugher Lord among their influences. The band Ocean of Zero considered Slaughter Lord important to the Australian metal scene, while Luxi from metal-rules.com described the band as veterans of Thrash Metal. Mortal Sin’s Mat Maurer found that Slaughter Lord was the only Australian thrash metal band in their early days alongside his band. In the same interview, interviewer David Laszlo also described the group as a cult band. Chris Volcano from Abominator named the band in the same breath together with Sadistik Execution and Bestial Warlust and called them pioneers. Ares Kingdom covered Slaughter Lord on their album Veneration , on which the band only covered various artists, and At the Gates also covered the band in a bonus song on the re-release of Slaughter of the Soul . The band is also mentioned in the documentary Metal Down Under . Drummer Steve Hughes himself testified that Slaughter Lord was Australia's first thrash metal band. Also Fenriz of Darkthrone spoke positively about Slaughter Lord.

style

In an interview, Steve Hughes stated that the band was mainly inspired by Slayers Hell Awaits , Sodom and Exodus to play faster and more extreme pieces. As influences he gave groups such as Cryptic Slaughter , Vehement , Napalm Death , early Morbid Angel and early Sodom as influences. In an interview with voicesfromthedarkside.de , Hughes also named groups like Metallica and Kreator as main influences. Through Mick Burke's big brother, the band also came into contact with groups such as Van Halen and Judas Priest and was particularly influenced by Venom's Welcome to Hell . Metalion ordered the band to Taste of Blood to the Death Metal and heard sonic parallels to Kreator out. metal.de assigned the compilation Thrash 'til Death 86-87 to Thrash Metal and made comparisons with bands like Kreator and Dark Angel . Alexander Melzer from metal-observer.com also heard influences from Death Metal.
