Moss is an English drone band. Her music is influenced by HP Lovecraft and occultism and her songs usually last longer than 20 minutes.
history
Beginnings
Moss was founded in Southampton in late 2000 by Olly Pearson, Dominic Finbow and Chris Chantler. The band released several demos themselves, the first in 2001. They also released a number of contributions to split EPs and compilations with bands like Torture Wheel , Unearthly Trance , Grief , Nadja or Wolfmangler .
The band rarely performs live. Their first gig was at a full day fundraiser in the summer of 2002. In 2003 they had only one time shows in London and Manchester. 2004 was the year with the most appearances so far and Moss appeared for the first time at the "Ashes to Ashes / Doom to Dust" festival in Ghent, Belgium and Tilburg. In winter they were the opening act for Sunn O))) in Bristol . Chantler left the band in early 2004. He was replaced by Andy Semmens of Esoteric until August and then by Jon Wilson , but came back in December to rehearse and record for Cthonic Rites .
Cthonic rites
On December 25, 2005, the debut album Cthonic Rites was released on CD on Aurora Borealis Records . Cthonic Rites was recorded in early 2005 in the Chuckalumba Studio by Jus Oborn, a member of the doom metal band Electric Wizard . The first edition was limited to 1000 copies, but a second edition was also produced. The first edition was available with a live CD that was recorded on August 20, 2005 at Camden Underworld for the 115th birthday of HP Lovecraft .
In March 2007, a single on 7 "was - Split with the French band ! Monarch on the Doom / Psychedelic / punk label Rise Above Records released She was limited to 550 copies on this single Moss covert the song.. Maimed & Slaughtered of British D-beat punk band Discharge . The planned split with the Japanese D-beat band Disclose could not be made because Disclose frontman Kawakami died on June 5. The song Crawl (Scrape) was recorded during the Cthonic Rites recording session recorded and never published.
The expanded vinyl version of Cthonic Rites was only released on October 12, 2007 and was limited to 1000 copies. Of these, 375 each contained a total of three records . The set included the previously self- released EP Live Burial . The offer included a gatefold and poster with the artwork of the American illustrator Justin Bartlett. On the band's Myspace page, the announcement was made that the second album would be recorded in January 2008 and will be released via Rise Above Records. In addition, two shows were announced that were played in December.
Sub Templum / Tombs of the Blind Drugged
Sub Templum's title was announced on May 26, 2008 via the band's Myspace page. The album was finally released worldwide on CD and LP in June via Rise Above Records in Europe and Candlelight Records in the US . The album was recorded at Foel Studio in Wales and was again produced by Jus Osborn.
In December 2008 Moss announced again via Myspace that they would like to release an EP next year . The title Tombs of the Blind Drugged was announced. The EP was recorded a year later as Sub Templum , again in Foel Studio, and was released on June 10, 2009 as a 10 "vinyl with two songs. The two record labels Rise Above and Metal Blade also released a CD version that was available as bonus tracks Eternal Return and a cover version of Discharges Maimed and Slaughtered included.
Current
Eternal Return was released as a 12 "record on December 24th, 2009. The single was available in 3 different packages.
Moss played again in 2013 at the Roadburn Festival , where they already appeared in their anniversary year 2010.
