Mount Carmel Township is a township in Northumberland County , Pennsylvania , in the United States . It was formed in 1854 from part of the Coal Township and is named after Mount Carmel in Palestine . In it are the boroughs of Mount Carmel , Kulpmont and Marion Heights . At the time of the United States Census 2010 there were 3,139 people living here, compared to 2701 inhabitants in 2000.

Mount Carmel Township is the easternmost township in Northumberland County. It is heavily molded from mining. According to the United States Census Bureau , the township has a total area of 57.0 km 2 , of which 56.5 km 2 are land and 0.5 km 2 (= 0.82%) are water.
The natural boundaries of the township are Mahanoy Mountain to the south and Roaring Creek to the north . This runs in a valley between Big Mountain and Little Mountain and forms in the area the county boundary to Columbia County with Cleveland Township . In the extreme northeast and east, the township borders on the Conyngham Township . On the county boundary to Schuylkill County (from east to west) the Butler Township , the Barry Township . To the south is also the East Cameron Township in Northumberland County. The Coal Township is on the west side .
Natalie is northwest of the township on Pennsylvania Route 54 . South of it, on the southern flank of a foothill of Big Mountain, is the Borough of Marion Heights and directly adjacent to the Borough of Kulpmont. East of Pennsylvania Route 61 are Strong and Atlas and the Borough of Mount Carmel. In the vicinity lie the hamlet of Diamondtown north and Connorsville and Dooleyville to the west . In the valley of Locust Creek , where this is in the Locust Mountain has cut, is Locust Gap . Just south of Locust Mountain is the Merriam and Locust Summit .
The Mount Carmel Township is largely drained by the Shamokin Creek and its tributaries; it therefore belongs to the catchment area of the Susquehanna River .

At the time of the 2000 United States Census, Mount Carmel Township was inhabited by 2701 people. The population density was 47.8 people per km 2 . There were 1,250 housing units, an average of 22.1 per km 2 . The population in Mount Carmel Township consisted of 99.56% of whites , 0% Black or African American , 0% Native American , 0.11% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 0.04% said other races to belong and 0.26% named two or more races. 0.11% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Mount Carmel Townships distributed to 1,086 households out of which 27.0% were living in children under 18 years of age. 51.3% of households were married, 11.1% had a female head of household without a husband, and 32.8% were not families. 30.3% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 17.6% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.93.
