The Mount Dana is a 3982  m high mountain in the Sierra Nevada in the State of California of the United States . It lies on the border between Mono County and Tuolumne Counties . The summit is the second highest point in Yosemite National Park . The mountain is named after geologist James Dwight Dana .

Location and surroundings

Yosemite National Park stretches west of the summit and Ansel Adams Wilderness to the east . The Tioga Pass ( California State Route 120 ) runs northwest . On the north side of Mount Dana is a small glacier , the Dana Glacier , and in a side valley is Dana Lake . On the northwest flank of the road is Tioga Lake , at the western foot of the mountain are the Dana Meadows , through which the Dana Fork stream flows. It flows into the Tuolumne River , which flows through the Tuolumne Meadows . The summit offers a great all-round view, including Mono Lake on the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada.

Peaks in the area are Tioga Peak in the north, Mount Gibbs in the south and Gaylor Peak in the northwest. The dominance is 18.35 km, so the mountain is the highest point in a radius of 18.35 km. It is dominated by Mount Lyell , 17 m higher, to the south-southwest .
