Mourad Laachraoui (born March 31, 1995 in Belgium ) is a Belgian Taekwondoin .

successes

Laachraoui started practicing karate at an early age . When the club he was training at went bankrupt, his father's initiative switched to a friend's club, which, however, did not offer karate, but taekwondo. At the age of 16 he switched to the Brussels Taekwondo Team and trained there with Si Mohamed Ketbi and Jaouad Achab .

Laachraoui has been taking part in international senior taekwondo competitions since 2013. His achievements include victories at the Israel Open (2015), Fujairah Open (2015, 2016), US Open (2015), Alexandria Open (2015) and Luxor Open (2016).

In 2015 Laachraoui won the silver medal at the Summer Universiade in Gwangju in the weight class up to 54 kg. In the final he was defeated by the Iranian Armin Hadipour Seighalani . In 2016 he became European champion in the 54 kg class when he defeated the Spaniard Jesus Tortosa in the final in Montreux . This qualified him for the 2016 Summer Olympics , in which the class up to 54 kg is not represented. He is nominated as a substitute fighter and part of the Olympic team as a sparring partner for the three other nominated Belgian Taekwondoin.

In April 2016, he was ranked third in the world in his weight class with 120.19 points.

family

Mourad is the younger brother of Najim Laachraoui , an Islamist terrorist who blew himself up as a suicide bomber in the terrorist attacks in Brussels on March 22, 2016 and is also associated with the terrorist attacks on November 13, 2015 in Paris as a bomb designer. Mourad Laachraoui condemned his brother's actions and expressed his condolences to all victims. The family has had no contact with Najim since 2013.
