Mustache (musician)
Mustache (actually François-Alexandre Galepides * 14. February 1929 in Paris ; † 25. March 1987 in Arpajon , department Essonne ) was a French jazz - drummer and bandleader as well as restaurant and club owner, comedian and actor .
Live and act
Mustache came from a Greek immigrant family and began his career as a musician in 1948 in the orchestra of Claude Luter , with whom he performed in clubs in the Paris district of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. He regularly accompanied Sidney Bechet with Luter . From 1950 he worked with his own formations, such as the Sept complices (1956/57). With his band Mustache et ses Moustachus he played rock 'n' roll parodies, such as the song Le Croque-Crane-Creux based on the text by Boris Vian . Around 1967 he worked with the Gros minets , u. a. with performances in the Olympia . The Gros minets included the pianist Jean Constantin, the vibraphonist Géo Daly , the trombonist Jordy Coll and the saxophonist Michel Attenoux . In 1978 he founded with Attenoux, Marcel Zanini , François Guin a . a. the ensemble Les petits Français , which played jazz-inspired versions of Georges Brassens' chansons .
In addition, Mustache ran a restaurant named after him on Avenue Duquesne and various clubs (in the 1960s the Bilboquet , from 1976 the Jazz Club de l'Hôtel Méridien Étoile ). He also pursued a career as a comedian and actor from 1955, often in a musician role. Mustache worked u. a. in films by Henri Verneuil ( Paris, Palace Hôtel , 1956), Billy Wilder ( Irma la Douce , 1963), Maurice Régamey ( Don't you want to be my murderer?, 1957), Pierre Schoendoerffer ( Ramuntcho ; 1959), Martin Ritt ( Paris Blues , 1961), Peter Ustinov ( Lady L , 1965), William Wyler ( How do you steal a million?, 1966), Duccio Tessari ( Zorro , 1975) or Jean-Louis Trintignant (1979).
He died in 1987 in Arpajon ( Essonne ) in a traffic accident.
