action

After the old governor fell victim to a murder plot, Colonel Huerta's captors also intercept the new governor and murder him before he can take office. Unnoticed, his relative Diego de la Vega slips into the role of governor and fulfills his oath at the deathbed to prevent bloodshed in the country. He quickly notices the Colonel's powerful position and the injustice that reigns in the country. As Zorro, he is supported by his mute servant, his clever dog, a little street boy, a monk and his cousin, the Contessina Ortensia Pulido. Time and again he succeeds in deceiving the soldiers through skill and many ruses, gaining the sympathy of the people and thereby hiding his true identity. Finally he frees the country's prisoners from a quarry. But the Colonel is on the verge of triumph when Zorro falls into a ravine in a carriage and the Colonel loses no time to marry the governor's cousin. When Zorro, who was believed dead, finally appears at the wedding party, the Colonel shoots the monk and duels with Zorro; the Colonel falls from the tower. Zorro, still unrecognized, rides away.

Reviews

The reviews of the film were mostly negative. For many film fans, according to the reviews, it is still "the best Zorro film of all time" .

“Unfortunately, the Italian western and gangster film specialist Tessari staged this story bypassing the virtues of the genre. On the one hand, he tries his hand at parody, on the other hand, he loads the naive plot with political phrases of non-violent resistance and democracy, which he then takes ad absurdum through his direction. "

Even Christian Kessler judges like: "How many other directors, so too Tessari not showing up to the task of a multi-million dollar production breathe life." It lacked "the grace of innocence to make sympathetic to the exercise". G. Grazzini saw the film even more critically in Cinema '75: "A mixed ice cream made of swords, gallantries and westerns that will taste good to boys who have not yet discovered sophisticated comics and who like the flavors impossible and silly."

Remarks

The film songs Zorro is Back and To You Mi Chica are interpreted by the Oliver Onions (the De Angelis brothers). An LP of the film music (CAM SAG 9063) with twelve tracks was released.
