Muhammad Hamidullah (born February 19, 1908 in Hyderabad , India , † December 17, 2002 in Jacksonville , Florida ) was an Indian Islamic scholar.

Life

Hamidullah grew up as the youngest of eight children. After receiving his first education from his Islamic scholarly family, he began schooling at Daru'l Ulum Madrasa and Jamia Nizamia in Hyderabad. Hamidullah then studied international law at Osmania University . He later took a closer look at books on Islamic international law such as those in the libraries of the Hijas, Syria, Palestine, Egypt and Turkey. Hamidullah wrote his doctoral thesis in 1933 in Bonn at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität on the same subject, in order to then conduct further research in Paris. Hamidullah received a doctorate (D.ès.L.) at the Sorbonne ( Paris ) in 1935. Hamidullah also used many North African libraries. After returning to India, he was able to take up his work at Osmania University. While he was appointed professor there in 1948 and was temporarily abroad for professional reasons, the state of Hyderabad was occupied by the Indian government. Hamidullah decided not to return to Hyderabad, but to settle in France as a political refugee.

Hamidullah gave lectures and organized conferences at many universities in France, Egypt, Pakistan and Turkey. In 1952 he began to work at the University of Istanbul, where he worked for several years as a professor at the Faculty of Literature at the Institute for Islamic Research and in Erzurum at the Faculty of Islamic Studies at Ataturk University . He also wrote scientific articles for many theological journals. He was also a member of the French National Research Organization ( CNRS ).
