Teruaki Mukaiyama
Teruaki Mukaiyama ( Japanese 向 山 光昭 , Mukaiyama Teruaki ; born January 5, 1927 in Ina , Nagano Prefecture ; † November 17, 2018 ) was a Japanese chemist who dealt with organic chemistry , especially organic synthesis .
Live and act
Teruaki Mukaiyama studied chemistry at the Institute of Technology in Tokyo with the degree in 1948 and was a lecturer at Gakushūin University in 1953 , from 1957 as an assistant professor. In 1957 he received his doctorate from the University of Tokyo . In 1958 he went to the Tokyo Institute of Technology as an assistant professor, where he received a full professorship in 1963. From 1973 he taught at the University of Tokyo until his retirement in 1987. In the same year he became a professor at the Tokyo University of Science , which he remained until 2002. Mukaiyama was a professor at the Kitasato Institute in Toshima from 2002 to 2009 .
Some reactions in organic chemistry are named after him, the Mukaiyama aldol addition and the Mukaiyama-Michael reaction . From 1997 to 1999, his group published a total synthesis of taxol , which several other groups had previously done.
In 1989 he became a member of the Académie des Sciences , he was an external member of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences . In 1986 he was President of the Japanese Chemical Society. He was an honorary doctor of the Technical University of Munich . In 1996 he received the American Chemical Society Award for Creative Work in Synthetic Organic Chemistry , the Sir Derek H. Barton Gold Medal in 2006 and the Tetrahedron Prize in 1998 . In Japan he was honored as a person with special cultural merits in 1992 and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1997 .
