John Mulagada

John Mulagada (born December 12, 1937 in Parripadu , Andhra Pradesh , India , † August 16, 2009 in Vijayawada , Andhra Pradesh, India) was Bishop of Eluru .

Life

John Mulagada studied at St. John's Seminary in Hyderabad and was ordained a priest on January 4, 1965 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him in 1976 as the first bishop of the newly founded diocese of Eluru , a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam . He was ordained episcopate on May 5, 1977, by the former Archbishop of Bangalore and later Cardinal Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy , Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples ; Co- consecrators were Saminini Arulappa , Archbishop of Hyderabad, and Ignatius Gopu MSFS , Bishop of Visakhapatnam.

He was the first bishop of the Roman Catholic Church in India to belong to the Dalit (“untouchable”) caste . He was particularly committed to social justice and access to educational institutions of the “untouchables” caste. He was named the first Telugu bishop.

John Mulagada died in office after a brief illness. The memorial service on August 19, 2009 at St. Xavier's Grounds in Eluru, which was held by Mariadas Kagithapu MSFS , Archbishop of Visakhapatnam, and Marampudi Joji , Archbishop of Hyderabad , attended over 20,000 believers, including 700 priests and 1,500 nuns.
