Actopan is a municipality in the Mexican state of Hidalgo . The seat of the municipality and largest place of the municipality is Actopan , other larger places are Chicavasco , El Huaxtho and El Boxtha . The community had 54,299 inhabitants in 2010, its area is 272.6 km² .

The name Actopan comes from Nahuatl : atoctli means fertile land , and -pan means "place on", thus roughly "place on fertile soil".

Actopan is located in the center of the state of Hidalgo, 120 km north of Mexico City.

The municipality borders on Santiago de Anaya , Metztitlán , Atotonilco el Grande , Mineral del Chico , El Arenal , San Agustín Tlaxiaca and San Salvador .

The Mission of San Nicolás de Tolentino is located in Actopan .
