Murgul (until 1987 Göktaş ) is a small town in the Artvin province on the Black Sea in northeastern Turkey . Murgul is about 48 kilometers northwest of Artwin and is home to about 60 percent of the district's population.
The district was founded in 1987 and is located in the middle of the province. It borders on the Arhavi County to the west, Borçka to the north and the central Artvin County to the east . In the south, the districts of Yusufeli and Fındıklı ( Rize Province ) form the border. Murgul is the second smallest district and has the lowest population in the province. The population density is slightly below the provincial average. The district is traversed by the Murgul Deresi , a left tributary of the Çoruh .
In addition to the district town, the district consists of eleven villages ( Köy ) with an average of 241 inhabitants. Damar is the largest with 510 inhabitants.
