Borçka is a town in the province of Artvin in northeastern Turkey . The city is home to about 45 percent of the district's population.

Location and structure

Borçka is located about 32 kilometers northeast of the provincial capital and about 35 kilometers east of the Black Sea coastal city of Hopa . The Borçka Dam is located 1.5 kilometers south of the city on the Çoruh River . The expressway from Hopa to Artvin leads through the river valley, a side road branches off in a south-westerly direction to Murgul in the Eastern Pontic Mountains .

The district is in the north of the province and borders the autonomous Georgian Republic of Adjara in the north . Internally, it is limited by almost all districts (with the exception of Yusufeli) in the province. The population density is above the provincial average, the proportion of the rural population is around 45 percent. They live in the 38 villages ( Köy , inhabited by an average of 370 people per village). The largest village is Güreşen (974 inhabitants).

History and cityscape

Before 1364 Borçka was temporarily part of the Trapezunt Empire . Sources from this period probably mention this place under the name Bourzo . A river bridge from the 19th century has been preserved.

The small town's multi-storey, uniform apartment blocks on either side of the Çoruh were almost all built after the 1970s. The older traditional wooden houses, which were unusually large in their time, have disappeared from the townscape. The business center with the bus stop is on the western side of the river valley, which is bordered by steep, wooded hills. Three bridges in the area of the village lead over the river. Immediately upstream of the city, the Çoruh is dammed up to generate electricity.

Remains of a small medieval fortress can be seen on the west bank of the Çoruh. The enclosing walls enclosed an approximately circular area with a diameter of 30 meters. On the east side, the semicircular apse of a chapel formed part of the castle wall.
