Yusufeli (until 1912 Kiskim ) is a city and a district in the Artvin Province on the Black Sea in northeastern Turkey . Yusufeli lies at the mouth of the Barhal Çayı in the Çoruh . The name Kiskim should be changed by order of the Interior Ministry, as there was a place with similar names near Ankara. Then the place was named after the Ottoman prince Yusuf Izzettin Efendi . The name means "Land of Yusuf".

A side road about 30 kilometers long leads northwest into the Katschkar Mountains to the village of Barhal , a hiking area with another church. The city is traversed by the Altıparmak River

Yusufeli is the largest district in the province, but it also has the lowest population density . The district is located in the south of the province and externally borders the provinces of Erzurum and Rize . Internally, the central district and Murgul form the border in the north . In addition to the district town, the district consists of 63 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 215 inhabitants. Kılıçkaya is the largest village with 1,068 inhabitants.

population

The number of inhabitants in the district has been declining for years. At the end of 2007 there were still 22,945 inhabitants. The 2000 census showed 29,133 inhabitants, in 1990 it was 37,060 and in 1975 it was still 43,356. Unfortunately, no results are available from the 2011 census.

architecture

15 kilometers southwest of İspir are the ruins of Dörtkilise church from the 10th century, 30 kilometers east the İşhan church from the same time has been preserved. Also known are the former churches of Öşk Vank and Haho , both of which can be reached from the road towards Erzurum .
