The Museum Barockscheune Volkach is a municipal museum in the Lower Franconian town of Volkach in Bavaria. It is located in the so-called baroque barn in Volkach's old town.

history

In the then prince-bishop's official city of Volkach, people began to collect the material remains of bygone times as early as the early modern period . In addition to the documents in the city archive, the so-called official portraits of the Würzburg prince-bishops , the official seal of the mayors and the so-called neck sword as a symbol of high jurisdiction were part of this collection. These were supplemented with gifts and foundations from private individuals.

In preparation for the 700th anniversary of the city charter in 1958, the shelf house acquired by the city was renovated and several objects from the city's history were presented in its rooms for the first time. Parts of the former exhibition can still be seen in the old kitchen of the Schelfenhaus. Targeted collecting of images and texts on the history of the city began in the summer of 1977 with the establishment of the Working Group on Culture and History of the Main Loop.

In the 1970s, artists from the Mainschleife presented their works in the premises of the Astheim Charterhouse (today the Astheim Charterhouse Diocesan Museum ), while the Schelfenhaus continued to hold exhibitions on cultural-historical topics such as the history of the city's water supply. In 1990 the Lower Franconian Culture Weeks took place in Volkach for the first time. The associated exhibition was relocated to the city hall for reasons of space.

The statutes of the Heimatverein founded in 1994 envisaged the construction of a museum. The city of Volkach provided the association with the so-called baroque barn. Smaller exhibitions in the building anticipated the later use. The first preliminary talks about the establishment of a museum took place in 1996 with the state office for non-state museums in Bavaria . A year later, Volkach architect Reinhold Jäcklein was commissioned to renovate the barn. The museum has existed since May 16, 2003.

building

The baroque barn from the outside

The barn was built in 1714 and is now set back from the road. The two-storey mansard roof building has exposed quarry stone masonry and square sandstone walls. The roof is covered with beaver tails and has dormers. When it was converted into a museum, the baroque barn received an elevator and other fixtures. A modern arched gate with quarry stone masonry delimits the property. The baroque barn is classified as a monument .

Permanent exhibition

The exhibition concept consists of a three- story permanent exhibition (on the upper floors and in the basement). On the first floor, the history of the city, its chronology, its rulers and its citizens are examined. The focus is on a large, wooden model of the city and the original Volkacher Salbuch . The second floor is dedicated to the Mainschleife region. For centuries, the river formed the basis of coexistence, as did viticulture. The exhibition is complemented by a large collection of buckets.

In the basement there is an original Büttner room by the Würzburg artist Heinz Schiestl . The collection of the city of Volkach is also displayed there. It is complemented by the archaeological finds of the driver pastor Georg Wehner and a collection of Franconian costumes . Six interactive stations are provided for guided tours for children, with the actor from the town clerk Niklas Brobst taking the lead .

Special exhibitions (selection)

There is space for special exhibitions and other events on the ground floor . The Museum Barockscheune participates in the cooperation “Art goes foreign ...”, in which several Franconian museums exchange individual objects (including the City Museum Kitzingen and the Museum für Franken ). In addition, there is always a separate exhibition with relevant topics at Christmas time.
