The Museum of the Slovak Village ( Slovak Múzeum slovenskej dediny ) is an open-air museum in the northern Slovakia and the largest popular outdoor exhibition in the country. It is located in the Jahodnícke háje part south of the city center of Martin and belongs to the network of the Slovak National Museum .

history

The interior of the Rudno Church

The first thoughts on an all-Slovak popular exhibition appeared at the end of the 19th century, when Slovakia was still part of Austria-Hungary . But it was not until 1931 that a detailed proposal was made to build a local museum in Martin. In 1943 the first building, a bell tower from Košťany nad Turcom , was moved to the Botanical Garden of the Slovak National Museum in Martin.

In 1964 the Slovak National Council approved the building of a folk architecture museum in Martin. On November 5, 1968, the foundation stone of an inn from Oravská Polhora was laid . The first partial opening took place in 1972 with the first building objects from the Orava region. In the 1970s and 1980s, the museum was expanded to include buildings from the Kysuce- Podjavorníky, Liptov and Turiec landscapes , although the expansion was largely discontinued after 1990, so that the exhibition on the Turiec landscape, contrary to the originally intended design, was not completed. Regular seasonal operations began in 1991 from May to October, and regular events have been held since then. The museum has been in operation all year round since 2004.

Construction objects

Residential buildings from Liptovská Sielnica

Today the museum presents the folk architecture, home décor and way of life of the inhabitants of northwest and northern Slovakia in the second half of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. In the 15.5 hectare area there are a total of 143 construction objects, 22 of which (mostly agricultural properties) are also equipped inside and open to visitors. In addition to residential houses and commercial buildings, individual technical, social and sacred buildings are also represented.

Some interesting objects are the wooden Roman Catholic church from 1792 from Rudno , an arbor from Slovenské Pravno , wagon shed from Moškovec , an inn from Oravská Polhora, an oil factory from Oravské Veselé , a country mansion from Vyšný Kubín and a school from Petrovice .
