Mustafa Kaplan (born September 2, 1967 in Kırşehir ) is a former Turkish football player and current coach.

Player career

society

Mustafa Kaplan began playing professional football in the youth of Kırşehirspor , the club in his hometown of Kırşehir. He then played for various clubs in the TFF 2nd Lig and TFF 1st Lig . He was mainly active in associations from Central Anatolia . In the summer of 1998 he ended his active footballer career with the capital club Ziraat Bankasıspor .

Coaching career

Following his playing career, he decided to start a coaching career. His first job was in 2003 as assistant trainer at MKE Ankaragücü . After three years with this club, he moved to city rivals Gençlerbirliği Ankara and worked here for two years before working again for Ankaragücü as an assistant coach for another two years. In the summer of 2010 he took over the position of assistant trainer once again and first assisted Thomas Doll and then his successor Ralf Zumdick . After Zumdick resigned from his position at the end of April 2011, Kaplan looked after the club until the end of the season and managed to stay up in the league with the relegation-threatened club. At the end of the season he handed over the post of head coach to Giray Bulak and became the club's sporting manager. Bulak announced his resignation two weeks later and was replaced by Fuat Çapa . With this trainer, Kaplan repeatedly experienced controversies due to different views on various topics. Finally, the club's management reacted and dissolved the contract with Kaplan and then later hired him again as a talent scout.

Before the 12th matchday of the 2012/13 season he took over the head coaching position at the second division club MKE Ankaragücü and replaced the resigned head coaching duo Taner Öcal and Yılmaz Özlem . At the time of the coach change, Ankaragücü was after the 11th matchday with only 5 points in the last place in the table and was considered a sure relegated team. Under Kaplan's leadership, the club began to worry about several surprises. So they completely surprisingly defeated Çaykur Rizespor , 1461 Trabzon and Adanaspor several teams in the top third of the table. With these results, the club retained the chance of staying up until the penultimate matchday and only rose after the 3-0 defeat against Denizlispor on the 33rd matchday. Despite this achievement, which was praised by the specialist press, Kaplan was dismissed from his position at the end of May 2013 after the club elections and the associated change in leadership in the club's board.

For the 2013/14 season he took over the coaching position at the fourth division club Hacettepe SK , the second team of his former employer Gençlerbirliği Ankara. With this club he finished the 2013/14 season and qualified for the playoff round of the season. In this his team prevailed against all opponents and thus achieved promotion to the TFF 2nd Lig . In July 2014 he was finally introduced as the new head coach of Gençlerbirliği Ankara.

After the 2-1 home defeat on matchday two against Bursaspor , he was sacked by club president İlhan Cavcav . According to unconfirmed rumors, Cavcav asked for certain players to be substituted at half time when the score was 1-0. After Kaplan did not comply, Cavcav dismissed him.

For the 2016/17 season he took over the second division club Giresunspor and looked after it until mid-November 2016. He then took over Hacettepe SK again from February 2017 and looked after it until summer 2018.

He started the 2018/19 season as assistant coach to İsmail Kartal and after his dismissal from Bayram Bektaş at Ankaragücü. After Bektaş was sacked in January 2019, Kaplan was appointed head coach. In this role, he ensured a successful change in performance at the club, which was seriously threatened by relegation, through targeted transfers, let his team play a respectable offensive football and thus secured relegation. For this achievement he received very positive criticism from the Turkish football press.

Despite the positive response from the trade press for his work at Ankaragücü, he did not receive a contract extension from this association. He was then hired by the city and league rivals and promoted Gençlerbirliği, his old club, as the new head coach. After he had previously looked after this club twice as head coach, this time he was hired as a regular head coach for the first time.
