Life

Gertrud Ellermann around 1925 during the years of her vocal training

Mutz Harnest graduated from high school in 1929 after four years of vocal training. Then she went straight to Vienna to what was then known as the “Women's Academy”.

In 1930 she was accepted into the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Karl Caspar as the only female student. In addition, she studied psychology and education at the university with the professional goal of being a high school teacher.

In 1931 she met Fritz Harnest for the first time at Karl Caspar's, whom she married in 1935. She later supported the family as a teacher for many years. The couple went through alternating stays in the north, in Munich and with the farmers in the Oberland. In 1937 their son Joseph was born, one year later their son Ulf was born. After an unsuccessful attempt to settle in Hamburg, the family moved to an apartment overseas in 1938.

When the war began in 1939 , Mutz Harnest was hired as a teacher at the overseas school. After the end of the war she was dismissed by the Bavarian state because she had a Hamburg exam.

From 1947 Mutz Harnest worked for 20 years as a secondary school teacher and art teacher at the Archbishop's Maria Ward Girls' Secondary School in Sparz in Traunstein .

After a creative life, Mutz Harnest died in 1991 in her home overseas.
